Chavez aims to repel US 'invasion' (The Scotsman, February 5th, 2006)

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez extended his verbal war with Washington, likening US President George Bush to Hitler while saying he was considering buying enough rifles to arm one million Venezuelans ready to repel a possible US invasion.

Speaking on Saturday at a mass rally commemorating a failed 1992 coup he led as a lieutenant colonel, Chavez warned that Washington was considering invading Venezuela and the country needed more weapons to defend itself.

"We still need a higher number of rifles," he said. "The 100,000 Russian rifles are not enough. Venezuela needs to have one million well-equipped and well-armed men and women."

Relations between Washington and Caracas have been tense in recent months, in part due to US criticism of Venezuela's purchases of military equipment, including 100,000 Russian-made Kalashnikov assault rifles.

Chavez told the crowd of cheering supporters he had started making contacts with other countries that would be able to supply the additional rifles.

Doesn’t this idiot realize they will be useless without horses?

We're criticizing this? Bush should issue statements in support of arming the Venezuelans. It would give Chavez something to fear.

Most dictators are smart enough to know that you don't arm those you're oppressing.

RC, HD - that would be ironic if Chavez armed the revolution against him. Like most dictators (and European leaders) he is trying to deflect anger away from himself and onto the foreign satan (US).

And hard to see how 1MM armed peasants are going to do well against Predators/Black Hawks etc.

Chavez may talk a good game about staring down any U.S. invasion of Venezuelan shores, but like his mentor Fidel, if he gets his one million Kalashnikovs, he mainly plans to point them in the other direction.

Ordering a mlllion AK's fight the Americans is sort of like the Mahdi buying a million spears to fight the British at Omdurman.

The comments about arming the Venezuelan people all correct, but this is not the 70's and 80's when the power of the FORMER SOVIET UNION covered Cuban "volunteers" sent hither, thither and yon. There would be no reason for the World Government to tolerate this sort of nonsense now.

Here's the scenario. Venezuela dispatches "volunteers" to assist a "national liberation front" in a neighboring country. That country protests this act of war to the World Government, which uses its authority to put an end to the whole business.

Sorry, Hugo, You've been talking to Crazy Cindy and Comrade Ramsey too much. This is not the past: the focus of evil in the modern world has been taken down.

He's not arming the populace, he's arming his Chavista thug supporters. Venezuela has a population of 25 million. 1 million thugs is just enough to keep everybody in line. And if a group of thugs gets out of hand, he can send in tanks.

The "Hyung" jury has spoken... scary (and a well-made point, by the way... calling people idiots always wins a debate in Chavez /Stalin / Hitler / Castro supporter circles).

The thugs will keep Venezuela in line and Chavez will be a dictator for a season.

All this will serve is making the U.S. return to nuclear power and hydrogen powered Suburbans.
