MAKE JOHN GALT A FANTASY PICK AND HE'D WIN:

August Straw Poll: The Big One (Patrick Ruffini, August 2005)

It's straw poll time again.

This one should be fun. It's pretty much all the likely candidates as they stand today in a main ballot, and a bonus ballot with the opportunity to vote for four of your favorite fantasy contenders. Once you get to the results page, you'll see exactly which likely candidates the fantasy candidates take the most from.

Here's another reason why this one's the Big One. On your ballot, you'll have the opportunity to mark your state. If this poll is as big as the last one (@13,000 responses), we'll have a statistically valid sample of online activists not just nationally, but in most of the fifty states. On the results page, you can filter the results by state, by region, or by Red vs. Blue states.

Hard to think of a less representative sample than people who read blogs, which skew heavily libertarian, but amusing nonetheless.

Most amusing for the fact that bloggers really don't like Mr. Campaign Finance Reform. And gratifying that so many really do like Condi. She's on the ticket for sure, the only question is which spot.

Only a theocon could afford to pick her.

Condi as VP. The media are virtually ignoring her, so she must be very effective. If she were screwing up, she'd be on the cover of every paper every morning.
I don't think the country is ready to vote for a black woman who's never held public office. A white woman is very iffy and a black woman, even more so, but after eight years as veep, a good economy, peace on earth and good will towards all men, she's a shoo in.

Erp - Once the MSM wakes up to a Condi as VP possibility they will turn on her in second, just as they will do with McCain (R-NYT) if he gets the GOP nomination.

The media are studiously ignoring Condi, so she must be very effective. If she were screwing up, she'd be on the cover of every paper every morning. That's my personal poll. Low cost and amazingly accurate.

Even so, I don't think the country is ready to vote for a black woman who's never held public office, but after eight years as veep, a good economy, peace on earth and good will toward men, she's a shoo in for 2016.

I'm surprised at Giuliani polling so well. I wouldn't have thought he'd have a chance at winning. This is a pleasant surprise.

Sorry for the double post. I went away from the computer, came back, didn't see the post, thought I had another senior moment, clicked post again and whatta know, there it is.

AWW -- The media will viciously attack whomever the Republicans nominate. That's a given.

Hard to say these polls mean much until the candidates start opening their mouths about the key issues of the 2008 election (or maybe in Chuck Hagel's case, shut their mouths). The big media outlets have tried over the past several years to push the divide between social and economic conservatives within the GOP, and that will be the main storyline once the '08 campaign takes off following the 2006 elections, when the media will be running up to religous conservatives and their leaders everywhere and asking "How can you support Rudy when he believes (name your social issue here)?"

The most interesting part of the polling in 2008 will be the media's abject desperation to get Hillary above 50%.

McCain or Rudy will probably start at around 54%, and not move much at all. Secretary Rice might even start higher.
