CONVENTION THOUGHTS--PLEASE ADD YOURS:
* Nixon's back!
* They have to stop dragging the family of the President on-stage--the Bush girls are cute enough but needn't be heard from and Mrs. Bush gave a perfectly competent speech but seemed uncomfortable doing so. Could somebody have gotten her a glass of water?
* On the other hand, the President with the baseball game backdrop was a nice touch.
* As Chris Matthews pointed out, the GOP played hardball tonight when they squeezed the networks commentary time right out of the picture by starting at ten and finishing at 11 with nary a moment between speeches.
* The next journalist who asks a Republican, "Do you feel like conservatives have been shut out since they got no primetime speaking slots?--other than the Vice President and the President", should be horsewhipped.
Posted by Orrin Judd at September 1, 2004 12:14 AMIf you assume that the people really wanting to watch the convention were the ones tuned to cable on Monday, while Tuesday's network airings were more likely to snare the casual voter channel surfing in the lower numbers on the dial, than the choices of speakers for the two nights makes more sense. More fluff and less meat on Tuesday, but as Clinton showed, fluff sometimes is a great selling point for certain voting demographics.
Posted by: John at September 1, 2004 2:52 AMJust watched the CSPAN re-broadcast. Schwarzenegger was close to perfect. Even tackling the delicate subject of intra-party squabbles, he did admirably. I'm pretty sure that if this speech were broadcast prime-time on the networks (was it?), it would be worth a few percentage points. The immigrant play was exquisite; this guy's a wonderful asset to the party.
Posted by: Jorge Curioso at September 1, 2004 6:18 AMArnold was great, but all the momentum he built up was hunted down and killed by the twins. Whoever ok'd that little skit has some 'splainin to do. On the other hand, I thought Laura was fine and GHWB has completed his metamorphisis into cute old dodderer (granted, he didn't have far to go).
The scheduling was good. What amazed me was that they were able to hold to the schedule so perfectly. A competent Republican party is a little disturbing.

Agreed. Arnold should have been the last speaker in prime time. I also looked at the clock when Mrs. Bush stopped speaking. It was straight up on the hour.
Posted by: Rick T. at September 1, 2004 10:45 AMAnother thought. Where have they been hiding this Michael Steele? I thought his speech was superb.

David,
Would you prefer that the trains not run on time?
Posted by: Pilgrim at September 1, 2004 11:14 AMYes, absolutely. I'd also be ok with the trains not running at all.
"Competent, efficient government" just isn't my cup of tea.
Posted by: David Cohen at September 1, 2004 12:16 PMDavid,
Can you really imagine a democratic government that is anywhere close to efficient? It would be a wonder to behold.
