IT'S GOOD POLICY...:

Senate GOP blocks oil taxes (Associated Press, June 10, 2008)

Senate Republicans blocked a proposal today to tax the windfall profits of the largest oil companies, despite pleas by Democratic leaders to use the measure to address America's anger over $4 a gallon gasoline. [...]

"The American people are clamoring for relief at the pump," said Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., but if taxes are increased on the oil companies "they will get exactly what they don't want. The bill will raise taxes, increase imports."

...to make gas more expensive, but suicidal politics unless tied to cuts and simplifications in other taxes.

What I really don't get is why no Democrat presidential candidate of the past few cycles has come out strong against the Saudis. Do they really think there is more political benefit to demonizing oil companies than the House of Saud? It defies comprehension.

Saudis have bought every Congressperson.

sam: Even if that were true, they then wouldn't mind being criticized because they'd know for sure that it was just empty words.

I think it's just that the Democrat leadership is totally influenced by the enviro-left who hate oil companies more than anything, and by the isolationist Hate-America-First left that cannot abide any American criticizing any foreigner. Why both those groups haven't been told to shut up and tolerate a bit of empty political posturing is beyond me.
