Poll finds 77% oppose licenses for illegals (Stephen Dinan, November 6, 2007, The Washington Times)

Voters oppose driver's licenses for illegal aliens by a nearly five-to-one margin, a new Fox 5/Washington Times/Rasmussen Reports poll finds.

As immigration politics explode into the presidential race, polls show Americans are taking a hard line on benefits for illegal aliens, including opposing driver's licenses and such taxpayer-funded benefits as scholarships at state colleges for illegal-alien students.

The American people are nothing if not fair-minded: neither do they want to deport illegals nor extend them privileges until they've earned them. The Right can't gasp the former, the Left the latter.

Given that you are about 90% correct on immigration, why is it that the "idiot center" fails to hold employers accountable (that is the real 'border'), and then loads up these bills with DL schemes, in-state tuition schemes, and other crap that even disallows the deportation of criminals?

(Actually, we ought to outsource our prisons to Mexico - win win all the way around)

You are correct in your critique of the left and right, but it is your hallowed "middle way" leadership in Congress and your hallowed 3rd Way Bush that are biffing this issue so badly.

Critique's valid except that you left out the fence.

The center wants more people working the jobs they won't do, not less. That's what we get. Periodically we'll give them amnesty. It's a jerry-rigged suystem but not the worst one.

What fence? It was a bone tossed to the wahoos.

Everyone is racist.

About every 3 or 4 months, there is a serious car accident in NC due to drunken illegals driving the wrong way on an interstate. Probably 10 or 15 people are killed each year in these wrecks. Is it more than similar accidents caused by drunken citizens? I don't know.

The local press plays up the stories, not because of the immigration angle, but because it is lurid. And because it keeps happening.

Of course you know. It's just race that makes it news.

Too bad that someone with an understanding of American politics and government could not hav predicted what a disaster the issue is turning out to be.

The entire cynical sham of introducing hordes of helot-class illegal aliens to work at below market wages is past due to come crashing down like the Hindenburg.

What part of EIGHTY percent do we yet not understand. Pervasive illegality cannot be sold in a nation whose sense of the rule of law is as profound as our. Playing the race card, the equivalent of waving the bloody shirt, isn't going to save this one. The continuing sordid ploy of calling people nasty names who obey the law themselves and expect similar piety in their neighbors not only does not work, it undermines considerations of decency and justice.

That's been the song for 400 years, since we let those gutter-filth Scots in. The crash keeps getting put off, eh?
