THE OLDNESS OF THE NEW WORLD:

'He is risen,' they still say (Mickey Noah, 4/02/07, Baptist Press)

It may surprise many, but 75 percent of the Americans who say they are not born-again Christians still believe the biblical account of Jesus literally coming back to life in his physical body, according to recent research by the North American Mission Board's Center for Missional Research. [...]

"It really stunned us to learn that 75 percent of those Americans claiming not to be born-again still believe in the resurrection," said Phillip Connor, research missiology manager for the Center for Missional Research. The CMR data was collected from a random sample of 1,204 adults across the United States. The interviews were conducted by the polling firm of Zogby International on behalf of the NAMB center.

"It also surprised us that 59 percent of those who rarely darken the church doors, and 39 percent of those who never attend church, neverthelesss still believe in the literal resurrection of Christ," said Connor.

And Europe wonders why it can't fathom us?

Umm, perhaps more Americans do not claim to be born again because they look at the likes of Orel Roberts and Jim Bakker and say, "If that's born-again, then I'll just be a believing Christian, thankyouverymuch."

Mikey has a very good point - while everyone surely sins, guys like Benny Hinn and Jimmy Swaggart certainly seem less interested in the presence of a living Christ than in their own petty stuff.

Of course, it is easier to say 'I believe' than it is to live it. One of the most revealing points in Scripture is what happened when Lazarus was raised from the grave - most were awe-struck and believed, but some ran to the priests to tattle on Jesus. Were they proud of their "whistle-blowing"?
