FEAR OF A BLACK SHIP:

Japan warms to idea of free-trade pact with U.S. (JOSEPH COLEMAN, 4/04/07, Miami Herald)

A free-trade pact between the United States and South Korea has cranked up the pressure on another top American ally in Asia to move forward on a similar agreement with Washington: Japan. [...]

While Tokyo has pursued free-trade deals with other Pacific Rim nations, the U.S.-South Korean accord spurred fears that Japan might fall behind in the global race to cut trade barriers.

Japanese Trade Minister Akira Amari compared it to the U.S. naval flotilla that forced feudal Japan to open up to the outside world in the 1850s.

'It is like a `black-ship' effect,'' Amari said Tuesday. ''But I think it will be a stimulus to gather everyone's wisdom so that we will not be left behind as other countries pursue more and more'' free-trade pacts.

But the lame duck is irrelevant.

oj, isn't it about time for the commodore to get that message out. We've had a long line of ordinary folk of all ages, educational and income levels in and out of our tax office and practically to a (wo)man they say they've given up on Bush because he's made a mess of things. These people believe themselves well informed and when pressed for specifics about Bush's missteps, there is only anger.

Game Point > the media has done a superlative job of propaganda.

He hasn't given up on them, which is all that matters.
