Putin 'against having third term' (BBC, 3/30/07)

A senior Russian lawmaker has proposed changing the constitution, in a move that might allow President Vladimir Putin to stay in power longer.

But a Kremlin spokesman responded by saying Mr Putin was opposed to any such change to the constitution.

Putin is following the usual script. He protests that he has no personal ambition. But because of the national crisis, or of the cry of the people, or the nomination of JarJar, or the [insert excuse here], he feels that it is his solemn duty to accept the heavy burden.
