IT TOOK A WAR TO FREE THE SLAVES LAST TIME:

Democrats should work with Republicans to end poverty, religious leader says (Associated Press, December 2, 2006)

Democrats and Republicans should work together to find new ways to end poverty, curb government corruption and strengthen families, Rev. Jim Wallis said Saturday.

“Answering the call to lift people out of poverty will require spiritual commitment and bipartisan political leadership,” Wallis, the head of the liberal Sojourners/Call to Renewal, an evangelical social justice movement, said in the weekly Democratic radio address.

“Real solutions must transcend partisan politics,” he said. “It is time to find common ground by moving to higher ground.”

A proposal that appeals across party lines is already out there, but the Democratic leadership has to oppose it because it would effectively end the New Deal/Great Society and the dependence of blacks on the Party.

And the Republican Leadership won't support it either, so where do we go?

It is time for America to 'transcend' the two parties. Their time should have been up long ago.

Yes, they do. You just can't pass it until they get to 60 seats in the Senate.

Just great -- the Second War on Poverty. Apparently we didn't completely win the first, so we should try again?

Because the strategy this time is the opposite of last.

The Congressional Black Caucus likes 'em poor. That stability thing.

What they really don't like is being exposed as 'plantation owners' by people like J.C. Watts, Walter Williams, Ward Connerly, and other conservative black Americans.
