CONFUSING A PAPER WALL FOR AN IRON CURTAIN AGAIN:

Discontent heard among North Koreans (Richard Spencer, 11/12/2006, Daily Telegraph)

While the popular image of North Koreans is of a nation living in blissful ignorance of the outside world and unquestioning loyalty to the leadership of Kim Jong-il, refugees interviewed while in hiding in China reported that there were increasing signs of dissent.

Eighty per cent of those questioned said North Koreans no longer believed official propaganda that living standards were better than in capitalist South Korea. In reality, income per head is 20 to 30 times higher in the South.

Nine in 10 of the refugees agreed that inside the country "North Koreans are voicing their concerns about chronic food shortages".

"Resentment toward the North Korean leadership for the continued hardship in the country is high," they said.

The NK people know their plight and know how the rest of the World lives but they have two hopeless problems facing them.

Kim is their big problem for sure but he's not their biggest problem. If he falters he's done. The military is just itching to declare martial law. If that happens their conditions will be worse.

What country will be the first to react if NK is taken over by the military?

China?

Worse? How could it get any worse?

If they're lucky, they might get a Pinochet, or at least a Quaddafi.

TEW,

You can't travel in NK without permission. You can't criticize the government. The government controls all media sources, all education, all housing, and all of the economy. Everyone dresses in a quasi-uniform.

What the heck would martial law look like in a place like NK?

I believe that Kim's biggest threat will come from his military. The NK inventory is obsolete, and their generals know it. No general likes being outmatched, and when the reason you're outmatched is because your Dear Leader has diplomatically isolated you from the entire world, well, maybe Dear Leader has to go...
