EVEN BETTER THAN THE WALL:

Immigrant detectors cost £4m but have never worked (David Harrison, 06/08/2006, sunday Telegraph)

Machines to detect illegal immigrants at foreign ports, which have cost the British Government millions of pounds to install, have not worked properly since they were first introduced four years ago.

Twenty-eight heartbeat detector machines, which use sensors to pinpoint a human presence in lorry trailers, were placed in French, -Belgian and Dutch ports from 2002 in response to a growing concern about illegal immigration.

The machines and 17 shelters cost £4.2 million and were paid for by the British taxpayer. David Blunkett, the home secretary at the time, hailed the initiative as "moving the UK's borders abroad to stop illegal entrants before they reach the UK".

Don't tell the wahoos and we can make a big production out of installing them on the border....

Heartbeat detectors?!? Wouldn't it have been cheaper to install ammonia detectors?

There are xray scanners in Rotterdam that can take an entire truck with a standard shipping container. Used to counter cigarette or drug smuggling. Sometimes they also find illegal aliens.
So either an incidence of pork, the governments desire to look active while achieving nothing, or both.

Why not use heat detectors like the ones we've all seen on TV crime shows actually showing live bodies moving around inside buildings and trucks, etc.
