THE TRUTH DESTROYED THEM:
Couple Reiterate Claims They Were Punished (Daniela Deane, July 15, 2006, Washington Post)
Former U.S. ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV and his wife, former CIA officer Valerie Plame, said yesterday that Vice President Cheney, presidential adviser Karl Rove and other administration officials knowingly lied and abused their power to get revenge against the couple for criticizing President Bush's rationale for going to war in Iraq.
I must be missing something, why shouldn't the government punish an employee who seeks to undermine it? Posted by Orrin Judd at July 15, 2006 10:43 AM
Because then McCarthy would have been right......
Posted by: Robert Mitchell Jr. at July 15, 2006 11:00 AMBut not Mary O. McCarthy (AKA: MOM)
Posted by: ghostcat at July 15, 2006 11:49 AMThe big media folks in general seem to have either realized that the Plame case was not good for the concept of jounalists being allowed to shield their sources, or they feel even for them i would be too much to go though another round of decrying leaks from the government at the same time they're defending them in relation to the New York Times' recent reports. Either way, most of the analysis by the conventional wisdom types have been, while not hostile to Val and Joe, openly disdainful of the chances of their lawsuit succeeding (presumably in hopes they'll listen to their "friends" and just let the whole thing go away).
Posted by: John at July 15, 2006 1:58 PMPrior to this lawsuit, the Plames have largely stayed out of the mass media spotlight. Lots of narrow-focus exposure, but not much on News-at-11. Most Americans wouldn't know them from Eve.
Now that they're out in all their dyed coif glory, the message is SHOW BIZ. They'll not be taken seriously from here on out.
