THE MILITARY WOULD BE A BARGAIN IF THIS WAS ALL IT DID (Via Ann Althouse)

The Political Economy of Beef: Oppression of Cows and Other Devalued Groups in Latin America Schedule Information

Abstract:

The focus of this paper is the effects of raising cows for “beef,” and the accompanying increase in the production of feed crops, in Latin America. It is suggested that the practice of “beef”-eating, a practice primarily of the elite and of the masses in affluent nations, has been promoted in the last century by large transnational corporations and protected by Latin American governments, with the support of the United States government and its military apparatus. Countless other animals and humans have been killed, and many others displaced, impoverished and exploited, as the profitable but devastating “hamburger culture” expands in the 21st century.

This paper will be given during the Animals and Society Paper Session at next months annual meeting of the American Sociological Association, in Montreal.

"...a practice primarily of the elite and of the masses.."

Good God. I actually laughed out loud after stumbling upon that gem. Now if we could just get the military to ride roughshod over the American Sociological Association, my tax dollars will have been well spent.

So they've got a beef with the hamburger culture's treatment of cows, eh? I mean, what's at steak here? Can there possibly be a meating of the minds, or will the issue be ruled by a follow-the-herd mentality?

"Oppression of Cows" I would suppose that they would not be pleased with how I oppress woodchucks as I celebrate the Noetic covenant.

GEN 9:1 And God blessed Noe and his sons. And He said to them: Increase and multiply, and fill the earth.

GEN 9:2 And let the fear and dread on you be upon all the beasts of the earth, and upon all the fowls of the air, and all that move upon the earth: all the fishes of the sea are delivered into your hand.

Gen 9:3 And every thing that moveth and liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herbs have I delivered them all to you.

Woodchuck meat is not bad, but it is a lot of trouble to prepare--much easier simply to pick up some beef at the supermarket.

When people start putting words like "beef" in quotes then you know you've got a witchcraft case for the Inquisition--time for a quick game of Letterman's "Will it Float"

It is sad to drive past a farm and see those little calves in their cages, knowing what their fate is going to be. [click~bleeding heart chip~off].

Though that sight is truely a bit disconcerting, it doesn't keep me from eating pork, poultry, beef, fish, turkey or venison.

If Latin American countries did not raise beef to sell to America and other rich nations, would the "many [people] displaced, impoverished and exploited" be well-off thereby, or simply still impoverished and exploited, but not displaced ?

Rhetorical, for we know the answer.
Perhaps the American Sociological Association will be so good as to take up a collection at their annual meeting, to provide relief for some of the downtrodden of Latin America - it would certainly do far more good than another polemic paper by Captain Obvious.

A couple of days ago, there was a rerun of the episode of "House" about a man who claimed to be in "love" with a cow. It was perfectly played and hilarious. Perhaps the writers had these crazies in mind when they wrote it.

One of the reasons we're big and strong, especially our famous bicycle racers, is because of the high level of protein we force feed our kids from birth up. Take a look at Americans in any situation where there are people from other lands. Not hard to pick us out even though we do have a variety of skin colors and hair types.

We're the ones with the straight backs and straight white teeth and the clear eyes. Live with it you idiots while you commune with each other in what was formerly moonbat friendly Canada. I hope they are quell surprised to find the ground has shifted on them and it's now decidedly leaning to the right both literally and figuratively.

Here's a solution to the cow oppression that at least Lou could get behind.
