"WE CAN DEAL WITH THIS OURSELVES:"

We can handle insurgents, says Iraq's new model army (Colin Freeman, 09/04/2006, Daily Telegraph)

Colonel Raad Abbas, a weary Iraqi army commander with two decades of war-fighting under his belt, stubs another cigarette out on his battered desk as he listens to the battle on his walkie-talkie.

In downtown Fallujah, some of his men have been ambushed by insurgents and in the heat of battle his patrol leader has forgotten to maintain radio contact. Col Abbas does not know where to send help, or how many of the enemy there are.

As he barks out orders to the rest of his officers, Major Mike Motley, the leader of a small group of US advisers attached to Col Abbas's battalion, offers his marines, complete with armoured Humvees.

The Iraqi's answer is the one that every coalition commander in Iraq - and their political masters in London and Washington - wants desperately to believe. "Don't worry," says Col Abbas quietly. "We can deal with this ourselves."

Let's hope so. Bringing at least some US troops home going into the Nov '06 elections should help Bush and the GOP.

What do our military commanders say? If they say Iraqis can do it alone, let's bug out.

Not "if". When.

Let's all hope that the Iraqi army intends to defeat the insurgents and then allow an elected government to rule. Generally, effective armies don't allow ineffective governments to rule. The army takes over themselves.

The scary part is that adopting the caudillo model of South America, with its rotating democratic and military juntas taking turns making a mess of things, would be an improvement for much of the Middle East.

R-i-i-i-ght. We'll bug out of Iraq right after we bug out of Korea, which we 'll leave right after we get out of Germany and Japan.

Lou. Do you approve of our staying in Germany and Japan and Korea all these years? Isn't time to let them take care of themselves?

"Marcus, do you approve of our staying in Britannia, Egypt and Dacia, all these years?"

Lou, you're over my head. Marcus isn't around anymore. What say you?

erp;

I believe Mr. Gots is alluding to Marcus Aurelius.

AOG, Yes and he's not around anymore. Sometimes the allusions are too obscure for me and thus I ask for clarification.
