THAT'S HOW TO DEAL WITH DESECRATORS:
Bangkok shrine attacker is killed (BBC, 3/21/06)
A Muslim man has been beaten to death in Thailand after attacking a Hindu shrine in the capital, Bangkok.
Rather than trying to make flag burning illegal again the states out to make lethal retaliation legal. Posted by Orrin Judd at March 21, 2006 8:22 AM
Some states have tried that route. I think it's Nevada that has a $20 fine for assault on a flag burner.

Posted by: Tom C., Stamford,Ct. at March 21, 2006 8:52 AMThat would be the best approach, though "lethal" may be a bit extreme.
Posted by: Bruno at March 21, 2006 9:10 AMOn the other hand, flag burners are burning their own flags, while this guy was damaging someone else's shrine. That's not a small difference.
Posted by: Annoying Old Guy at March 21, 2006 9:51 AMIf flag-burning is free speech, then surely in many places & instances it should qualify as fighting words...
Posted by: b at March 21, 2006 10:19 AMThe real problem is the way we've "legalized" everything. Now days if you see someone engaged in anti-social behavior, the only choices are to ignore them, or get the gov't, through the police or courts, to do your dirty work for you. There's no "third way."
Someone else made the same point the other day about these laws that keep protesting creeps away from funerals. In the Bad Ol' Days, it was pointed out, if someone disrupted a funeral, a couple of "able-bodied men" would have handled the situation.

Idolator.

Posted by: oj at March 21, 2006 12:58 PMRaoul: Exactly. "Protesting" at a funeral is "fighting words" if anything is...
Posted by: b at March 21, 2006 1:18 PMI'm fine with bringing back "fighting words" in to legal use.
