YOU ARE WHAT YOU TOLERATE:

What Will Europe Really Do? (Victor Davis Hanson, 2/14/06, Real Clear Politics)

If the most liberal and tolerant states in Europe such as Holland and Denmark have the most problems with Islamic radicals, then what does that say about the continent as a whole? Why were not the calculating jihadists singling out a more unapologetic Catholic Poland that has larger contingents in Iraq and is far prouder of its Christian roots?

Do the Europeans sense that the more open, free-wheeling and non-judgmental the culture, the more it is hated by the jihadists? If Europe as a whole is more pro-Palestinian than the United States, disapproved of Iraq, and yet is still hated as much, is magnanimity at last exposed as appeasement—earning only contempt from an emboldened enemy?

Ironic that those in the West most opposed to the war on terror are the most responsible for creating the jihadists.

Denmark isn't particularly tolerant of Muslims.

Multiculturalism. They can't see anything worth preserving or defending. They are confused. Like all taken in by equivocations. The Cold War was the most recent example of so-called liberal politicians not being able to discern the qualitative differences between our system and theirs. Today, in the face of secularization rampant in the open west, some of those rightly troubled by the trend, see Islam as an alternative. It is a reactionary, totalitarian approach to social organization which will destroy all that remains of value within western civilization. Hoping that sensible Islam prevails, when none really exists or can exist within pluralistic societies, is a pipe dream. Defeating this bizarre religious totalitarianism, isolating them or buying them off are the only alternatives with any basis in historical reality. Piracy, intimidation, ransom seeking and imperial aggression is the story of Islam's relationship with the west. Historical revisionism doesn't change the facts. It is a worldly 'religion'like all totalitarin systems. Europe is not yet lost. It will be lost if the mindless acceptance of multicultural claptrap continues much further than it has and is not reversed. Equating the Islamic tradition with the Judeo-Christian traditions of the West doesn't help.

There is nothing worth defending in European secularism.

I don't get the point of editing my post. It was factual and related to the subject matter. The Danes are helping the US in Afghanistan and Iraq. (my criticism of a public official, also seemed relevant)

Posted by: h-man at February 14, 2006 10:49 AM

It was both factually incorrect and used a Nazi meme against Condi Rice.

Posted by: oj at February 14, 2006 10:53 AM

So, nothing remains worth defending and preserving? Europe is more than it's current dalliance with extreme secularism. Islam is not the cure, it is a symptom of the disease.

Posted by: Tom C., stamford,Ct. at February 14, 2006 10:56 AM

If it is more it will defend itself and win. if it's not then Islam will be an improvement.

Posted by: oj at February 14, 2006 11:06 AM

Nonsense.Islam,in power,is a cult of violence and arbitrary rule.

I'm not counting Europe out. They've been known to rise up and deliver some serious whoop-*ss before, and I fully expect them to do so again.
Eventually, it will suck to be a Muslim in Europe. You don't need to be religious to fight a religious war.

When?

Two opposite yet equally bad scenarios are emerging from the Muslim rage that was triggered by the cartoons:

Scenario I — Muslim action provokes a European reaction.

Frightened by the growing numbers, strength and anger of these unassimilated Muslims dwelling in their homelands, European voters turn to right wing politicians like Le Pen and in extreme cases politicians like Slobidan Milosovich. Faced with further Muslim rage and refusal to adopt European social standards, even reasonable and liberal Europeans come to see people like Le Pen as their only option. Further repressive legislation is passed to keep the Muslims in their place, and only makes things even worse. As the number of Muslims reaches a tipping point, frightened Europeans turn on them. From Spain to Germany and Italy to England, Europe becomes a giant Bosnia lit by the fires of anti-Muslim pogroms. Huntington's "Clash of Civilizations" becomes bloody reality.

Scenario II — Muslim rage provokes European appeasement.

Bending over backwards to accommodate the enraged Muslims (in the name of multi-culturalism) European governments clamp down on press freedoms in the name of anti-bigotry legislation. Seeing the Europeans as weak and easily pushed around, Muslim clerics clamor for more privileges and demand further press restrictions and the effective end of freedom of expression. A different kind of tipping point is achieved as those Europreans who can, leave for North America and Australia, causing a massive brain and cash flow drain from the Continent. The Papacy takes up residence in Sao Pualo, Brazil and a mussein calls the faithful to prayer from the balcony of St. Peters. Attempts to accommodate Muslim religious fanatics turn out to be the greatest betrayal of freedom since Munich. Gibbon's fantasy of Muslim scholars studying only the Koran in Oxford becomes a reality. The remaining Europeans are reduced to dhimmi status like the Copts of Egypt.

European and Muslim history don't give much encouragement for the possibility of a reasonable third scenario where Muslims and European can form a true multi-religious community of mutually respecting and tolerant ethnic groups.

All in due time, oj. They realize they have a problem. That is the first step.

Posted by: AllenS at February 14, 2006 1:22 PM

No, they don't. They think Islam is the problem.

Posted by: oj at February 14, 2006 1:27 PM

The stuff I'm reading here could have come from Oswald Mosely. Seriously, it's so absurdly over the top, poisonous and paranoid.

It's easy to see how it's come about.

American bloggers' obsession with Europe's 'decline' + fear and loathing of Muslims after 9/11 = verge of intifada.

You guys should get on a plane and go and visit the real world some time. The one on the screen in your basement is seriously warped.

Wrong Time Zone.

Posted by: oj at February 15, 2006 7:10 AM

i expect we will have to get on the plane, again, and come save europe from itself, again. or then again, maybe we won't. maybe we will just wait for the post-appocalypse sales.

Posted by: toe at February 15, 2006 10:01 AM

Yes, 'appocalypse' is the sort of thing I mean by 'absurdly over the top'.

Posted by: Brit at February 15, 2006 11:30 AM

i guess 50m dead doesn't qualify as an appocalypse in your book. guffaw. keep thinking Americans are ignorant, it makes it a lot easier to keep "eating your lunch".
