THEY DIDN'T PAY TO HEAR CRITICISM OF THEIR OWN REGIME:

Al Gore Event Funded by Bin Laden's Family (NewsMax, 2/13/06)

The Saudi Arabia seminar that was addressed by former Vice President Al Gore over the weekend in a speech that criticized the U.S. for being too tough on Arabs was sponsored, in part, by Osama bin Laden's family.

On Saturday, the state-run Saudi news outlet Arab News reported that the Jeddah Economic Forum, where Gore spoke, was funded by "Saudi Arabian Airlines, the Saudi Binladin Group, Gulf One Investment Bank, Saudi Basic Industries Corp." and an array of other big companies with ties to the Middle East.

About the only place where the Democrats' criticism of Bush in the past could even remotely be considered "to the right" when it came to the war on terror was when they attacked him for being too close to Saudi Arabia. Even Michael Moore used that tactic in "Farenheit 911", though down deep, you knew it was just a strategic maneuver and that when push came to shove, the left wasn't going to actually want to do anything to the Saudis to punish them for their actions, as opposed to punishing them for whatever help (albeit reluctantly) they were giving the administration.

Gore's allegations show that the goal isn't to get the Saudis to change their actions in a positive way for the war on terror, it's to change their actions in a way that would most hurt the administration, since that's who they consider the real war to be against. If the Saudis are to change, let them change in a way that gets the Republicans out of power by 2008, and we'll think about the consequences of fanning anti-American beliefs among Muslims later.
