THE MILLION NATIVIST MARCH
US lawmaker sees border 'war' with renegade Mexican troops (AFP, 2/9/03)
A Colorado lawmaker said there was a "war" under way along the US-Mexico border and urged President George W. Bush to deploy troops there, alleging drug trafficking by the Mexican military.Posted by David Cohen at February 9, 2006 11:20 AMRepublican Representative Tom Tancredo said the United States was facing "a war" with renegade Mexican troops over the long, porous border. . . .
"They (officials) do not want to say the obvious -- that the Mexican government does not even have control of its own military," he said, drawing applause from some 50 demonstrators.
To be fair, there have been a lot (20, 30 perhaps) stories in the past several months about mysterious incursions over the Rio Grande involving heavy weapons, armored vehicles, larger than usual bands of armed men, and drugs. Maybe not the Mexican military, but it is something. When an SUV loaded up like a Mogadishu "technical vehicle" starts shooting at the US Border Patrol and the local police, we're not talking daily laborers here.
Posted by: ratbert at February 9, 2006 12:21 PMIf they'd finish the Big Bend border highway from Presidio to the El Paso area, it would allow for improved local and INS patrols, as well as more regular traffic that would deter any quasi-military types from massing along the river's edge. The road where the standoff occurred two weeks ago just dead ends at the river and is of little use to anyone besides the smugglers.
Posted by: John at February 9, 2006 12:32 PMThis sounds promising. I've always wanted to fight in another war. The thought that this time, I could just drive my car to it, gives me hope. Although, Canada is closer.

Posted by: oj at February 9, 2006 12:40 PMThis could be stopped in short order by a few Apache helicopters with missiles -- no need for a large number of troops.

Shark attacks aren't a casus belli, border incursions by your neighbor's army just might be.

50 demonstrators. Man, just like Lexington and Concord.

I have 3 rifles, 2 pistols, a shotgun, bow and arrows, tomahawk, scalping knife, and a boomerang. When sharks pose a problem, I'll build a harpoon. Oceans are the same drive as is the southern border.
