IF THE AYATOLLAH DOESN'T GET HIM, DEMOCRACY WILL:

War with Iran on the worst terms (Spengler , 2/13/06, Asia Times)

Iran cannot be persuaded to abandon its nuclear ambitions. Its peasants and urban poor gave an overwhelming electoral mandate to a government with imperial ambitions. The government cannot be overthrown, and cannot be derailed.

Odd sort of claim to make about a president who was just elected and has to stand for re-election who's at odds with the Supreme Guardian who oversees him. Khamenei and the reformers having learned their lesson there's little chance that Ahmadinejad will get a second term, even if he's permitted to finish this one.

The Spengler article is wacky--"unhinged," Ann Coulter would say.

He is saying that we should all fear that Iran will do its worst and that Iran need not fear that we shall do our best in response.

The notion that we may not deter Iran the way we deterred the FORMER SOVIET UNION is a reproach to those of us were part of the first deterrent force. What is it, now that we have safely won, do they say the manner in which we won is unacceptable?

Must we spell it out? Iran does not deter us with threatening general war, because geneeral war with the United States is utter annilhilation.

"there's little chance that Ahmadinejad will get a second term" So you really believe in the Iranian electoral system.

Yes. Their elections have been free and fair, though the Guardian Council needs to loosen up on who can run. Reformers and Khamenei screwed each other over this time with the boycott, which is how this clown got elected.

Actually, I thought the article wasn't so bad. A bit overwrought, But WTH. We shall have to bomb Iran back to the stone age soon. The only question is when. He says sooner, and that is fine by me. But, we have to get France, Russia and China to buy off on the plan. They don't have to do any thing, although transit over Russia would be nice, but they can't back-stab us on this one, like France did on iraq.
