MOVING FROM VICTORY TO VICTORY:

Alito heads into Judiciary committee vote (AP, 1/24/06)

Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito takes his first step toward the high court with a preordained Senate Judiciary Committee victory Tuesday, but the strength of opposition among panel Democrats may forecast his margin of victory in the full Senate.

It's somewhat early, but it's been an awfully good century for the Right.

Anything less than a 10-8 party line vote will be considered a loss for the Democrats (anything less than that for the Republicans and Arlen Spector better get his office phone disconnected). It's unlikely either will happen, but today's session will give people a chance to get more Kennedy/Schumer/Biden sound bites recorded for their blooper reels.

At this point last century, it was an awfully good century for European monarchies. To quote Han Solo, "Great shooting, don't get cocky!"

France's was gone, Britain's was neutered and the Tsar had a Constitution forced on him. The world's superpower was a democracy.

"Don't get cocky" is always applicable.

I've always loved that quote for the priceless moment of Han Solo telling someone else not to be cocky.
