AND THE "E" IN VALENTINE LIGHTS UP! (via Glenn Dryfoos, including title)
Sapporo toasts Valentine by naming beer after him (Associated Press, 11/11/05)
Bobby Valentine is so popular in Japan that he now has a beer named after him.Posted by Orrin Judd at November 11, 2005 2:44 PMTo commemorate Valentine guiding the Chiba Lotte Marines to their first Japan Series title in 31 years last month, Sapporo Breweries Ltd. has come out with BoBeer, a special version of its popular Black Label lager that's available only in Chiba.
The can features a cartoon likeness of Valentine giving a thumbs-up and saying "We're No. 1."
Take that Reggie. Bobby V. has topped you.

I went to Colgate with one of the Matt's Brewery kids--according to their Dad, Billy Beer was actually just a can, that breweries like theirs put beer in and then sold.
Posted by: oj at November 11, 2005 3:00 PMBobby V owns a couple of bar/restaurants around these parts. It'll be a good seller.
Posted by: Tom C., Stamford,Ct. at November 11, 2005 3:42 PMIf it was being sold for the can, and not the contents, then that would explain why the contents were so bad. (The same would go for "Old Frothingslosh" — "The Stale Pale Ale With the Foam on the Bottom", featuring "Miss Frothingslosh" in all her Reubensque glory, except that that was part of the joke.)
Posted by: Raoul Ortega at November 11, 2005 5:23 PMJust resurrect the old Ballentine Beer jingles and commericals with Mel Allen, and substitute a 'V' for the 'B' and you've got a ready-made ad campaign for the next baseball season, though I don't know how well a "(V)alentine Blast" would translate from English into Japanese.

Yes, it was whatever low-end brewery near you felt the can would sell better than their beer.
