WHERE IT'S GOOD TO BE PRO-UNION:

Direct Darfur talks amid violence (BBC, 10/04/05)

Sudan's government and two rebel groups have met face-to-face for the first time since they resumed talks to end the crisis in Darfur.

The groups have been in Nigeria's capital, Abuja since the middle of September. They are expected to discuss power-sharing. [...]

The BBC's Jonah Fisher in Darfur says the Sudanese government is still reeling from the normally cautious AU's damning statement on the continuing role of the state military in Darfur.

The statement said that in the last two weeks there had been a number of coordinated offensives by the Sudanese army and the Arab militia - known as the Janjaweed.

Darfur has become a proving ground for the African Union and a deal would bode well for the AU's ability to be a beneficial influence in the region.

WHERE IT'S BAD TO BE PRO-UNION:
French strike disrupts transport (BBC, 10/04/05)

French transport and other industries are being seriously disrupted as trade unions hold a one-day national strike.

In Paris, about half the metro service is not running and hundreds of flights are expected to be grounded. Hardly any buses are in operation in Marseille.

The strikers oppose government economic policies, including plans to privatise state firms, and complain that low pay is eroding their purchasing power.

The strike is seen as a big test of new PM Dominique de Villepin's reform plan.

French media are predicting the action will represent a "Black Tuesday" for the prime minister.

This is pretty common, in France.

That example, and transit strikes in NYC and San Francisco, among other places, is yet another reason why Orrin's black fascination with mass transit is so funny, and odd.
