WHATEVER HAPPENED TO MONEY BEING DETERMINATIVE?:
As Corzine lead wilts,
Clinton gets call (Kenneth R. Bazinet, 9/29/05, NY Daily News)
Former President Bill Clinton is being called in to help rescue the slumping New Jersey gubernatorial campaign of Jon Corzine, who has given up a double-digit lead and is just 4 points ahead of Republican Doug Forrester in a new poll."It's 911 time in the Corzine campaign. Obviously, he's in trouble," said a senior Democratic strategist.
Clinton will campaign with the Democratic U.S. senator today at Kean University in Union, hoping to turn around Corzine's stalled run for the New Jersey statehouse.
A Quinnipiac poll gives Corzine a 48%-to-44% lead over Forrester - a 6-point drop from a month ago
Sort of sad that the only party leader you can bring in is the pumpheaded ex-president. Posted by Orrin Judd at September 29, 2005 1:49 PM
OJ, I'm pretty sure that was a feature, not a bug. Mr. Clinton did not and does not like threats
to his power base. Any potential competitors were
cut down like wheat.....
Al Gore was picked in 1992 because was a New Democrat but then mysteriously ran as Truman.
Posted by: oj at September 29, 2005 2:16 PMSo now that Forrester has a shot, are any big-name Republicans showing up to help him out? I don't see any mention of it on his website. Tom Keane and Rudy Giuliani come to mind as two party leaders who are relatively popular in NJ and might create a positive penumbra. Or at least the impression of the emanation of one.
Posted by: HT at September 29, 2005 2:27 PMHT - Up until recently it appeared Forrester didn't have a shot. If polls continue to show a close race the GOP would be stupid not to get after it. But given there past history of giving up on candidates who have a shot it is possible.
