STILL TIME TO CHANGE YOUR PICKS....:
Bush Drops 'Diversity' Hint About Nominee (JESSE J. HOLLAND, Sep 26, 2005, AP)
President Bush hinted on Monday that his next nominee for the Supreme Court would be a woman or a minority, saying that "diversity is one of the strengths of the country." [...]Posted by Orrin Judd at September 26, 2005 5:21 PMTwo-thirds of the 100 senators Republican and Democrats alike had already announced their support of Roberts, the conservative federal appeals court judge, as the successor to the late William H. Rehnquist before the Senate even started its final debate Monday afternoon. [...]
A floor vote is planned for no later than Thursday.
Oh please let it be a black woman with a name-of-color. I want to see Teddy's head explode.
Posted by: ray at September 26, 2005 7:33 PMA panel of powerful, fat, rich, white men interrogating a black woman? Now THAT'S some quality C-SPAN. Republicans on the comittee should just yield all their time back to spool out as much rope as possible.

Posted by: Dave W. at September 26, 2005 10:47 PMTo Bush's credit, his multiculturalism is consistent with his immigration stance, in contrast to many of his supporters who believe the latter does not go hand in hand with the former.
Posted by: carter at September 26, 2005 11:10 PMHe's monocultural, multiethnic.
Posted by: oj at September 26, 2005 11:13 PM"Diversity is strength" is the rhetoric of multiculturalism, and only makes sense in a multicultural sense.
Bush has openly praised multiculturalism in the past:
"We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism, and culture. Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, [or] Chicago . . . and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende...For years our nation has debated this change. Some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America."
In other words, he welcomes an America in which a large, unassimilated Spanish speaking population is praised, not resented, and where parts of America are linguistically and culturally indistinguishable from parts of Latin America.
Posted by: carter at September 27, 2005 1:15 AMNo, multiculturalism is a diversity of cultures. Bush is going to name someone of entirely orthodox American views who happens to be biologically diverse. Of course, as the most conformist nation on earth we have almost no diversity of culture to speak of.
Posted by: oj at September 27, 2005 7:13 AMClearly Bush thinks that we have more than one culture, and that it's a new thing, and something to be welcome.
"we have almost no diversity of culture to speak of"
Sure we do:
"In Houston, Sylvia Garcia is the only Latino on the Harris County Board of Commissioners, half of whose district is within Houston city limits. She comments, "I have a [Third World] colonia in my district -- 95 percent of the residents speak only Spanish, and most have [annual household] incomes beneath $15,000."
Bush, as his remarks quoted above make clear, welcomes the presence of such 'third world colonia's', while you deny they exist.
