IS THERE A BRIT LEFT WITH A PULSE...
Europe wins the power to jail British citizens (Anthony Browne, 9/14/05, Times of London)
BRUSSELS has been given the power to compel British courts to fine or imprison people for breaking EU laws, even if the Government and Parliament are opposed. An unprecedented ruling yesterday by the supreme court in Europe gives Brussels the power to introduce harmonised criminal law across the EU, creating for the first time a body of European criminal law that all member states must adopt. The judgment by the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg was bitterly fought by 11 EU governments, including Britain, and marks a dramatic transfer of power from national capitals to Brussels.
Diplomats said that it was political dynamite in many countries, but the European Commission welcomed the ruling, on a test case about environmental law, as a landmark that sets an important precedent.
...or are they going to take this lying down too? Posted by Orrin Judd at September 13, 2005 10:28 PM
If they really wanted to fight this decision, all they needed to do was de-fund all the salaries for the entire EU court (or kill the justices, but that seems, well, a bit Elizabethan).
The bureaucrats in Brussels must laugh when they read that they were bitterly opposed by 11 separate governments.
It makes me think that if Osama (or Zawahiri) really wanted to find a safe place to hide, there couldn't be a better place than some random EU building.

Christian charity hopes agitprop art will oust 'wimp' image of Jesus
By Robert Verkaik
Published: 14 September 2005
The church is to draw on images of two of the most famous Communist revolutionaries of the 20th century in an advertising campaign aimed at ending the perception of Christ as a "wimp in a white nightie".
Bold, red posters featuring Jesus as a baby play on the idea of the infant Christ as the South American guerrilla fighter Che Guevara or the Chinese leader Mao Zedong....

Posted by: oj at September 14, 2005 7:29 AMOne wonders what Blair's supposedly "conservative" government will do. Likely nothing.
Posted by: Paul Cella at September 14, 2005 8:43 AMBlair killed the EU by scheduling a British vote on the constitution.
Posted by: oj at September 14, 2005 8:48 AMA vote? The EU doesn't care about votes. The Eurocrats (which probably includes most of British Labour) will simply use that old trick of voting again, and again, and again -- until they get the result they want, then the votes will end.
Posted by: Paul Cella at September 14, 2005 9:09 AMThe votes worked.
Posted by: oj at September 14, 2005 9:17 AMAs Andrew Jackson said: The Justice has made his decision, let us see him enforce it.

Hey, why not just use the King County method: only vote once, but keep recounting, again and again, finding votes along the way, until you get the results you want? Much easier to control, and cheaper, too.
