IF ONLY ROE HAD A STROM THURMOND THE WAY JIM CROW DID:
Among Democratic Activists, Little Indecision on Roberts (ROBIN TONER, 9/22/05, NY Times)
While many Democratic senators are still wrestling with their vote on Judge John G. Roberts Jr.'s nomination as chief justice of the United States, Democratic activists - in advocacy groups, policy organizations, the party apparatus - do not seem nearly as torn. The opposition to the Roberts nomination in Democratic circles is vocal, widespread and not confined to the party's left; Bruce Reed, the president of the centrist Democratic Leadership Council, urged a no vote this week, even as Howard Dean, the Democratic chairman, declared Judge Roberts "the wrong man for the job." [...]
Ellen Malcolm, a leading fund-raiser who heads Emily's List, a group that backs Democratic women who support abortion rights, said Democrats at the grass roots wanted to see their senators fighting back, even if they lacked the numbers to prevail.
"I'm a realist here. They've got their 55 votes," Ms. Malcolm said of the Republicans. "But people want to see a show of strength and leadership from Democratic senators."
Leadership means going down in flames fighting for abortion? Posted by Orrin Judd at September 22, 2005 11:29 AM
What I find odd is that there is so much inchoate opposition to Roberts. At one of the lefty sides I read, there is much despair and gnashing of teeth at Roberts and how the Democratic Senators are going to let him be Chief Justice. I have yet to see, however, anything specific about what's wrong with Roberts. He's labeled an evil troglodyte but no evidence for that is ever presented. Apparently Bush has the "touch of evil" and the fact Roberts was nominated by Bush is sufficient evidence.

Roberts has not _specifically_ endorsed the laundry list of liberal jurisprudence that the Dems want. Therefore, he *might* vote to overturn some/all of the list. Therefore he must be opposed. It really is that simple.
Posted by: Bruce Cleaver at September 22, 2005 12:24 PMThey need someone on the Supreme Court steps shouting "Abortion Now! Abortion Forever!" to really motivate the troops. Spraying Roberts with a fire hose or sicking the German Shephards on him also would be a nice touch.
Posted by: John at September 22, 2005 12:33 PMAOG - They want power. It's all about their power. He's not one of them, and he consumes a scarce SC slot; therefore he takes away their power. By his existence, he's a threat.
Posted by: pj at September 22, 2005 12:57 PMOJ, what has he said or done to make him a "white supremacist/nazi/facist/theocrat" like everyone else on the right? For that matter, what has the right done to earn the title "white supremacits/nazi/facist/theocrat? I am not trying to insult you, I am trying to understand this comment that on face value is ludicrous. Perhaps, if you can give concrete examples (and not just rantings about nonspecific feelings you may have), I can be convinced. I am willing to be open-minded.

He dares to disagree with the tolerant openminded left. That's enough to make him a worthless scumbag in their eyes.
Methinks I smell a rat maties. Be careful OJ.

Posted by: Rick T. at September 22, 2005 3:05 PMYes, be careful! Someone's actually asking you to rationally explain your extreme views. Yes, I know...ALL Democrats are bad and immoral, ALL Republicans are good and moral, ALL Democrats are Anti-American and love terrorists, everything associated with France is bad, blah blah blah...By talking in such absolutes and extremes, you will have no chance of being heard except by those who already agree with you. And that's easy, isn't it? He asked a question that deserved more than a typical "all Democrats are awful" stock answer. Believe it or not, not all Democrats dislike Roberts.
Posted by: at September 22, 2005 4:28 PMI don't see why the Dems don't just vote the way their constituents expect them to, which is no. No big secret, it's all about abortion. They are the opposition party, they should oppose. I don't get all the hand-wringing.
Posted by: Robert Duquette at September 22, 2005 4:56 PMAnon;
First off, to answer the question means accepting quite an extreme view, to wit
a "white supremacist/nazi/facist/theocrat" like everyone else on the right?
Secondly, I frankly don't understand the question. OJ is a strong supporter of Judge Roberts and obviously doesn't believe Roberts is any of those things, so how can OJ explain why he believe that? I read it as OJ commenting on how the Left believes that of Roberts and, as I mentioned in my previous comment, there doesn't seem to be any basis for that belief other than what OJ responded with – Roberts is a registered Republican.
If you want the question answered, could you rephrase it in a way that
- Doesn't package deal presumptions
- Asks about something OJ actually believes
AOG: He seemed to be implying that that's how all Democrats view The Right, which is not the case. All Democrats do not think that all Republicans are awful. They also appreciate some acknowledgement that they have the right to disagree without being labeled as immoral idiots for doing so -- just a general example (not about the moderator in partucular): not everyone who disagrees with the war is "for the terrorists", unamerican, or unsupportive of the troops. Gotta run -- thank you for responding in a way that was not an attack.
Posted by: Defender of Hate Speech at September 22, 2005 5:26 PM AOG, I think what the comment is supposed to do is make you feel guilty for the collective 'WSNFT'.
I believe that the democrats, ruled as they are by their factions, see the republicans the same way, and use the 'WSNFT' storyline in an attempt to
break up the party. The democrats do not accuse all the republicans as 'WSNFT', just the ones who oppose their agenda. See? they are not bigots....
Trollie, The great Krauthammer said, "Republicans think Democrats are wrong, Democrats think Republicans are evil."
That about sums it up. The stuff you're talking about is just shorthand people use when talking to like-minded people. I think it's safe to say most of us are open minded and willing to learn. Tell us about those Democrats who are high-minded, don't practice the politics of personal destruction and don't lie, distort or spin the truth. You know, those who don't sell their votes to Soros et al and rejoice when a soldier is killed because it will Bush look bad.
It must be a very short list, so it shouldn't take but a moment for you to jot it down.
