WE’RE GONNA NEED SOME BIGGER CONFESSIONALS
Now global warming is a mortal sin (Linda Morris, Sydney Morning Herald, July 2nd, 2004)
A key international body of the Anglican Church has declared the wilful destruction of the environment to be a sin as a core group of Australian religious leaders have placed their political weight behind a campaign to fight global warming. The environmental network of the worldwide Anglican communion has framed an urgent and strongly worded statement to the church's global leaders warning humanity has failed to fulfil "God's will for creation" and of the imminent "perilous and catastrophic collapse" of the Earth's ecosystem.
The advisory body calls for environmental education of its clergy, churches to be built to conserve energy and for pressure to be applied on governments and industries to build sustainable communities "beyond" the Kyoto Protocol. The protocol has not been ratified by Australia.
A separate protocol from the Canadian church warns that anyone charging market prices for drugs will be turned into a pillar of salt.
Posted by Peter Burnet at July 1, 2005 5:34 PMCO2 causes global warming, now a mortal sin. Breathing creates CO2.
Therefore, stop breathing!
Posted by: Bret at July 1, 2005 6:12 PM[T]he wilful destruction of the environment [is] a sin
Quite so, and always has been.
Consider the wholesale slaughter of the buffalo, or the ongoing massacre of elephants and rhinos for only their tusks and horns.
'Course, "willful" and "destruction" are pretty big loopholes.
[H]umanity has failed to fulfil "God's will for creation"
Very debatable.
It's probably literally true, but that doesn't imply that we won't in the future, regardless of whatever blunders we've made so far.
[T]he imminent "perilous and catastrophic collapse" of the Earth's ecosystem.
Complete and utter rubbish.
Even if the Earth were to warm by ten degrees F by 2100, (a very doubtful proposition), that wouldn't cause the ecosystem to "collapse", although humans might not like the ways in which it would change.
Pretty much, Bret. It's a sort of fatwa against fire. No word on what they think of the wheel, though I do know oj's agin those.
Posted by: joe shropshire at July 1, 2005 6:46 PMForgive me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been three weeks since my last trip to the recycling center.
Posted by: David Cohen at July 1, 2005 7:14 PMHow long before they take away the statues of the Jewish-looking guy with the beard and replace them with fetishes of Gaia?
Posted by: bart at July 1, 2005 7:45 PMAccording to the Catholic Church a sin is mortal only if it fulfills three criteria:
1. The act is seriously wrong.
2. You know it is wrong.
3. You knowingly commit the act.
Confession is good for the soul, my son.
For your penance, David, you will take out the trash for the next 3 weeks.
Posted by: John J. Coupal at July 1, 2005 8:03 PMDoomed! We're all doomed!
Posted by: Genecis at July 1, 2005 8:48 PMbart;
Don't you mean replace the UN flags, which replaced the statues of the Jewish looking guy with a beard?
Posted by: Annoying Old Guy at July 1, 2005 10:56 PMHail Marty, Kyoto monitor of God, blessed among environmental scientists, pray for us now and at the hour of our recycling.
Posted by: David Cohen at July 1, 2005 11:04 PMHey good idea...
Oh my Earth, I am heartily sorry for having polluted you...
Posted by: RC at July 2, 2005 12:52 AMOr how about...
Soul of Gaia, sanctify me; Body of Gaia, save me; Air of Gaia, inebriate me; Water from the rivers of Gaia, wash me; Passion of Gaia, strengthen me; Oh good Earth Mother, hear me; Suffer me not to be separated from you; From the Malignant Bushhitler protect me; On the hour of my death call me and bid me return to you; So that with the ghosts of the tree stumps and the cute animals departed I may praise you forever and ever.
For I remember that I am topsoil and to topsoil I shall return.
Sancti Domini Gaia, ora pro nobis. Amen.
Posted by: Matt Murphy at July 2, 2005 2:25 AMSuper, Matt, but shouldn't all your "we's" be changed to "us'"? Giving these guys some credit for religious sincerity, they are just promoting neo-paganism under the guise of Christian scripture and institutions. No room for individual blessings or sins in that world. It's all about the tribe.
Posted by: Peter B at July 2, 2005 7:43 AMPeter B:
Why assume sincerity? Have you ever met an ecofreak who wasn't a self-centered preening crackbrain?
Posted by: Matt Murphy at July 2, 2005 11:09 AMMatt:
No, indeed, but they were all very sincere about it.
Posted by: Peter B at July 2, 2005 11:49 AMMother Gaia, we love all your creation, all the earth and every grain of sand in it. We love the rocks, leaves, the trees, and every ray of your light.
We love the animals; you have given them the purist thoughts and instincts, and blesssed them with joy untroubled. We will not harass them, nor deprive them of their happiness.
We love the natural resources they blanket the earth and are embedded within it's crust, all give reflection of our priceless wisdom and lavish benevolence. We will not rape, plunder or lay waste to them, nor will be have anything to do with those who defile your good earth.
We give you thanks, O Gaia, and bless your wonderful name.
Posted by: Dave W. at July 3, 2005 12:50 AMShould we all go out and sh*t in our backyards? Feed the beast, as it were?
