WHAT IS IT ABOUT NEW HAMPSHIRE AND FLYING?

Keene man pleads guilty to trespassing at airport (AP, 6/14/05)

A Libertarian from Keene (New Hampshire) who tried to board a flight carrying nothing but a Bible and a copy of the Declaration of Independence has pleaded guilty to criminal trespassing. . . .

Kanning went to Manchester Airport on Saturday, saying he was protesting mandatory identification checks and search methods that call for security personnel to pat down passengers.

He said the search methods are intrusive and harsh.

Supposedly, this protest, and a related protest in which a man performed an unlicensed, and thus illegal, manicure in front of the state licensing board's offices, are connected to the Free State Project. The purpose of the Free State Project is to move 20,000 libertarians to New Hampshire, where they will vote in a libertarian government and set up a libertarian paradise where manicurists are free of stultifying regulation and passengers can board airplanes without showing ID. Freedom for manicurists is libertarianism in a nutshell -- unarguably right and yet petty.

On the other hand, if you don't want to be patted down by TSA, don't fly. As it happens, I have boarded an airplane without ID in the post-9/11 world. It was no big deal. Thanks, TSA.

Which airport? Inquiring minds want to know. Everybody there should be fired.

I've flown through Jacksonville International, Hartsfield and LaGuardia in each of the last 3 months and I've been properly searched each time. In fact, at JIA last Thursday, the screeners noticed a large metallic object in my carry-on and asked to search it. I consented and they pulled out a plastic bag with my pocket change. Frankly, I'd rather have them be more careful than less.

These 'libertarians' like all extremists carry their position to absurd extremes. Throw the book at these clowns and let them room with some of our more charming inmates for a while and see if they are quite so interested in childish disruptions of the sort that got most of us a healthy spanking when we were toddlers.

Bart: It was San Diego. I didn't sneak on, I identified myself upfront as not having ID. In fact, I called the day before and told them I wouldn't have ID. They told me to come to the airport as scheduled, but couldn't promise that I'd be allowed to board. As it turned out, when I got to the airport it was clear that there was a routine for dealing with people without ID and I got on my flight.

David Cohen:

That's why you should carry a Visa Check Card.

There's an ad on your site to "support Lebanon's independence."
I saw it after I read this post, and found myself wondering for about 3 seconds, is there a Free City movement too?
stupid lebanon naming itself after a country.

We fly out of Orlando quite a lot and although there have been major delays at the checkpoint and people with very tired children trying to get home after a Disney vacation, there has never been a second of impatience or irritability.

We all know it's necessary and if you can't grin and bear it, it's best not to fly.

Last fall at the Hartford (CT) airport while we were waiting for our flight, a plane landed loaded with service men and women. When they filed out into to waiting room, there was a spontaneous eruption of cheering and applause.

The soldiers looked quite embarrassed, but we didn't care, we just kept cheering. Some of us emotional types couldn't stop the tears from flowing. They're all so young, they looked like high school kids.

While many prominent libertarians are more or less rational people (e.g. Prof. Reynolds, Stephen ("Vodkapundit") Green, Ann Althouse), but I'm beginning to think that there's a whole bunch out there who are just another flavor of totalitarians. For instance, the libertarian who wants to ban the U.S. flag.

how do you get them back in the nutshell?

Libertarians are anarchists who own property and anarchism is just a stepping stone on the way to totalitarianism.
