Byrd, Capito race
too close to call
(Therese Smith Cox, June 03, 2005, Charleston Daily Mail)

A new poll shows Sen. Robert Byrd and Rep. Shelley Moore Capito would run neck and neck in a possible campaign for the Senate seat now held by Byrd.

An RMS Strategies Poll released today reports that 46 percent of 401 registered voters in West Virginia would vote for Byrd if the election were held now.

A total of 43 percent picked Capito, R-W.Va., though she has not announced her intention to run.

This one won't even be an upset.

Will the state's main television station WBYRD carry a debate between the two?

Posted by: John J. Coupal at June 3, 2005 7:33 PM

no, but WKLAN is carrying it.

Oh please dear heaven: grant us this wish!

Remarkable that in both publicly released surveys Capito is at 43%--without even announcing. Clearly there are a lot of Mountaineers willing to send the Kleagle the way of Bill Roth. Of course, even if he loses, he might be too senile to notice.

This sounds good but watch the NRSC decide it can't defeat Byrd and let this one slip away either by convincing Caputo not to run or by not strongly supporting her.

it will be if Rove doesnt get GWB's attention...

you guys need to look at how the BRAC is recommending closing the state's major ANG base..home of the Air Force's highest achieving C-130 unit, and best ANG unit for something like 5 consecutive years. Byrd is taking all the credit for keeping heat on the BRAC, and Bush won't lift a finger to stop it. If the Republicans dont step in...then one of 2 things happen--the base is saved and Byrd gets the credit, the base closes--and GWB and Shelley get the blame...the base employs nearly a 1000 persons both full and part time---pretty near all of them Republicans. The Prez needs to step in here, or Shelley's power base, the Kanawha Valley, will fall in line behind old Robert.

Has anyone ever lost a congressional seat because of base closings?

Posted by: oj at June 4, 2005 12:10 AM

are you saying those republicans are "bought" ? maybe they can vote for lincoln chaffee or harry reid.

Posted by: cjm at June 4, 2005 12:16 AM

all WV elections are bought one way or another...cynicism compels us to believe most elections, most places, most times are decided that way...ask yourselves why IS Bobby B still in DC? WV knows better than to kill the goose who lays eggs of gold...

OJ...Shelley won't lose her congressional seat necessarily IF she can be shown as fighting the good fight, but she lost her county of residence in 2004, and the base is located there...my feeling is the public wants to see her in there pitching and if she is, that will be enough.
