GEE, HOLDING OFF ON CONDI 'TIL AFTER THE INAUGURATION PROVED SO DEVASTATING...

Gonzales Nomination Won't Be Voted on Before State of the Union (Jesse J. Holland, 2/02/05, Associated Press)

"This is a breakthrough of incredible magnitude for Hispanic-Americans and should not be deluded by partisan politics," said Florida Sen. Mel Martinez, the nation's first Cuban-American senator. "Judge Gonzales is a role model for the next generation of Hispanic-Americans in this country." [...]

Martinez, the former Housing and Urban Development secretary who broke with Senate tradition by giving part of his floor speech praising Gonzales in Spanish, said the confirmation would mean a lot to young Hispanics who have never seen one of their own in the top four Cabinet positions: secretary of state, defense secretary, treasury secretary or attorney general.

Gonzales' confirmation "will resonate through the Hispanic community, just as it has resonated throughout our community that he has been the president's lawyer," Martinez said.

Republicans said part of the reason the vote is happening on Thursday is because Democrats don't want to give President Bush a success to tout in his State of the Union speech.

Don't stunts like this just call attention to how futile the Democrats' resistance has been rendered?

Amen. Not only futile but juvenile resistance as well. Maybe it's just me but the dems seem so predictable and immature. Bush could claim air is great to breath. What would we read next day? Dems slam Bush over 'air' statement. Sure as the sun rises.

"Don't stunts like this just call attention to how futile the Democrats' resistance has been rendered?"

This is absolutely true. But, by way of explanation, you're forgetting a few relevant possibilities:

(1) The Democrats, or at least some Democrats, are actually sincere in their opposition to Gonzales, and their concerns regarding his endorsement of nearly unlimited executive power. Or are they all unprincipled liars?

(2) The Democrats, or at least some Democrats, are beginning to understand that as a minority party they have no function at all unless they are also an opposition party. Shall they just roll over and offer you their bellies instead?

(3) I have never bothered to find out for myself, but you have also never presented any quantitative data - i.e. polls - indicating Gonzales' support among Latinos. I do know that at least some Latino "leaders" (of what I'm unsure) have accused Bush of "tokenism." Is it possible that Democrats know what they're doing with regards to this constituency?

It's not tokenism to put someone in such an important position, in which they have significant authority, and in which they are actually supposed to be useful.
Tokenism is appointing someone to a position based upon their race, religion or ethnicity (E.g., the old "Jewish seat" on the Supreme Court, if it had ever been given to someone with weak qualifications.)
It's difficult to allege "Tokenism" in an Administration with so many minorities in significant positions -- two black Secretaries of State, a black Secretary of Education in an Administration that emphasizes education, etc. etc. etc.

Teddy Kennedy, for instance, is a murderer, adulterer , drunk, liar and most likely to senile to have any principles. But I am sure they hate Gonzales passionately, because he is a friend of Bush, who they hate more than they hate spinach.

"(2) The Democrats, or at least some Democrats, are beginning to understand that as a minority party they have no function at all unless they are also an opposition party. Shall they just roll over and offer you their bellies instead?"

This is not the U.K. they are not in parliment. All they are going to do is convince the american people that they are adolecent jerks who should not be trusted with power.

"(3) I have never bothered to find out for myself, but you have also never presented any quantitative data - i.e. polls - indicating Gonzales' support among Latinos. I don't do polling and I don't discuss it, as I belive it is all GIGO. Latino "leaders" like Black "leaders" are MSM manufactured partisan shills. They will bark in chorus when commanded. What we do know is that Bush ran much better in Hispanic areas in 2004 than he did in 2000 or if you want another perspective, the Dems are loosing their grip on that constituency. Combine that news with the weak showing of Cruz Bustamante in the California recall, and the rainbow coalition looks blury.

Making Gonzales AG is not tokenism. Speaking only from own perspective as a member of an ethnic minority, even if you do not like the politics of a nominee, you are proud of his accomplishments and, if he is attacked, get paranoid about why he is being attacked. Ethnic politics is and has been a dominant theme in American politics. A large part of the Democrats dominance from 1932 to 1980 was their ability to play the ethnic game. Their downfall began when they decided to sacrifice Catholics in the North East to feminism.

Going after Gonzales to get Bush has al the marks of an ethnic tin ear.
