Iraq Sunnis Seek Troop Pullout Timetable (RAWYA RAGEH, 1/09/05, Associated Press)

Iraq's most influential Sunni group will abandon its call for a boycott of Jan. 30 elections if the United States gives a timetable for withdrawing multinational forces, a spokesman for the group said Sunday.

Members of the powerful Association of Muslim Scholars relayed their request to a senior U.S. embassy official at a meeting Saturday, the Sunni official said on condition of anonymity.

The response should be that we will do what the elected government of Iraq wants us to do, not what some group that represents a segment of a minority population wants. If you guys want to participate, fine. If not, don't call us when the elections give a result you don't like.

We certainly didn't do what the last elected government of Iraq wanted us to do. But, Saddam's election was a predictable and pointless operation which fooled nobody. These next elctions are to be the pure, undeniable voice of freedom, reigning clear from every detention facility and every pile of rubble in Iraq.

Yeah, call their bluff and give a timetable! "2025!" Let the Assoc of Mulim Scholars chew on that one for a while.
