THIN LINE BETWEEN:

The Right Wing Hates America (Margaret Kimberley, 1/27/05, The Black Commentator)

The right wing hates America. They are the first to wave the flag and loudly proclaim their love of country. They are also the first to stab their country men and women in the back when it suits them.

Now that Bush is safely in power for another four years they are wasting no time in showing us that they are firmly in charge and not taking any prisoners. Their goals are very simple. They want to destroy the government’s ability to do anything except fight wars and make the wealthy even wealthier.

In early 2003 the occupation of Iraq was becoming a certainty. Despite the acquiescence of the media, the entire Republican party, and far too many wimpy Democrats, thousands of Americans joined the rest of the world in demonstrating against the approaching atrocity. The press barely acknowledged the existence of dissent, and the right wing vilification began in earnest.

The protesters were said to hate America but love Saddam, tyranny, and terrorism. They were accused of not supporting the troops, as if sending men and women needlessly to their deaths was proof of love.

Nearly two years later 1,286 American soldiers have been killed. Iraqis have paid a much higher price. At least 14,000 of them are dead as a result of Uncle Sam’s aggression.

We don't hate America, we just figure that a small price to pay to liberate 25 million Iraqis.

"The press barely acknowledged the existence of dissent ..."

Perhaps, Ms. Kimberley, the fact that you could only scrape together a few thousand demonstrators out of a nation of 280 million made it insignificant.

"Nearly two years later 1,286 American soldiers have been killed. Iraqis have paid a much higher price. At least 14,000 of them are dead as a result of Uncle Sams aggression."

You and your ilk were gleefully predicting 5,000-10,000 American casualties just from the initial invasion. Sadam was averaging 60,000 Iraqis killed per year. And where is your outrage at the Iraqis now being killed by the Sadamites, which you cravenly attribute to America instead? Or to the mass graves which are being uncovered?

First, a party with the platform "[D]estroy the governments ability to do anything except fight wars and make the wealthy even wealthier" would soon eclipse the Democrats.

Second, "thousands" of Americans? Does she have any idea how pathetic that is?

Gently, gently now, please. We can't buy the devastation this kind of drivel-talk inflicts on the left's prospects. Sure it's ignorant, odious pap. But all it will do is offend the majority and arouse the marginal to new and greater public displays of outrageousness. Think of it as the perpetual motion machine of the permanent conservative majority.

Boy, this "conservatives hate America" line is gathering steam, and not just in the usual catatonic Left outlets like Common Dreams. Paul Krugman voiced it in a column he wrote after the Republican National Convention:

[M]any of the people at that convention, for all their flag-waving, hate America. They want a controlled, monolithic society; they fear and loathe our nation's freedom, diversity and complexity.

At least Ms. Kimberley deserves credit for not repeating the "100,000 dead Iraqis" pseudo-stat.

I wonder if she believes that AIDS is a CIA plot.

Surely we've done better than 14,000 in 2.8 years?
