HUH?:

Social Security For a Savings Society (Steven Pearlstein, January 21, 2005, Washington Post)

More of us own houses and financial assets than ever. But with a national savings rate near zero, what we urgently need to become is a "savings society."

So go out and sell your house and cash in your 401k and put it all in a passbook savings account so we can be Japan?

You'd think by now the govt or whoever would have adjusted the definition of savings to incorporate things like 401Ks to dispel the notion of the US as non-savers.

Why? They haven't adjusted inflation measures to account for the idea of shopping around.
