WHAT'S LEFT TO UNDERMINE?:
Bush 'Undermining UN with Aid Coalition' (Jamie Lyons, 12/30/04, The Scotsman)
United States President George Bush was tonight accused of trying to undermine the United Nations by setting up a rival coalition to coordinate relief following the Asian tsunami disaster. The president has announced that the US, Japan, India and Australia would coordinate the world’s response.
But former International Development Secretary Clare Short said that role should be left to the UN.
“I think this initiative from America to set up four countries claiming to coordinate sounds like yet another attempt to undermine the UN when it is the best system we have got and the one that needs building up,” she said.
Imagine for a moment that you've just been through what the tsunami victims have been through and you're told that you can either get help from Kofi Annan or the US, Japan, India and Australia. Posted by Orrin Judd at December 30, 2004 4:37 PM
It's just Clare Short, a leftwing Labourite imbecile, blathering away again. Nothing to see. Time to move on, folks. Show's over.
In reality, by the time the UN finishes deciding what to order for lunch at their get-acquainted meeting, the US, Japan, Australia and India will have built all the victims new houses and infrastructure. There'll be superhighways coursing through all the affected areas, by the time the UN gets around to discussing the matter once they've finished condemning Israel.

Take that food and those medical supplies and tents and put them back on that C-130 and go back where you came from, do you hear me! . . . Don't give me that nonsense, Mister Unilateral Cowboy! It doesn't matter if those people are sick or starving or not, you don't have the moral authority to be giving them aid in the first place."
Smugly congratulating himself for successfully upholding the sanctity of International Law in the presence of reporters, the UN/EU/NGO official turns his back on the scene of the disaster and boards the Dassault Falcon waiting to take him to the next international conference, at which he will condemn the Bushitler administration for not doing enough for tsunami relief.
Posted by: Mike Morley at December 30, 2004 5:25 PMThese morons are finally getting good at figuring Bush out. Earlier, it would have taken at least six months for them to realize that Bush was undermining the UN. It would be foolish to give any money to the UN, the first thing they would do, as they always do, is purchase scores of Toyota Landcruisers with the blue UN logo to tool around in.
Posted by: Sam at December 30, 2004 5:37 PMC'mon OJ, you left out the best part:
It is the only body that has the moral authority. But it can only do it well if it is backed up by the authority of the great powers.
. . . . . .
She said the US was very bad at coordinating with anyone and India had its own problems to deal with.
I dont know what that is about but it sounds very much, I am afraid, like the US trying to have a separate operation and not work with the rest of the world through the UN system, she added.
Let's see -- UN and moral authority; there's an oxymoron
And, the US doesn't play well with others -- well, when the US went to the UN to deal with Iraq, the UN failed. Why would anyone in their right mind believe that the UN would be any different when it comes to helping the victims of the tsunami? Oh, I suppose it's because it allows more US/Bush bashing.

I intend to post this every time Clare Short's name comes up. let me quote her (from the BBC) in 1999, during the Serbia-NATO war.
-----
Ms Short criticised the "doom and gloom" merchants who had criticised the air campaign from the start.
She said: "The truth is this is a war. Wars are vile.
"It's against an evil, monstrous regime that has caused a terrible war and displacement, raping and killing people in Bosnia. Now it is doing it again.
'We will succeed'
"This evil will be reversed. We will succeed, the sooner the better.
"But we will do what is necessary. It will be done and we will look after people and get them home."
---
Remember, THE UN DID NOT SANCTION THIS, AS THE RUSSIANS (de facto) VETOED IT.
I intend to drape these words around Clare's neck like an albatross. Note how the conflict was justified.... as long as the EU's neck was on the line, and the hell with the UN. Anywhere else, "Horrors, how DARE you go against the mighty and moral UN!"
Got two words for ya Clare, and they ain't 'Happy Birthday'.
If Bush weren't trying to undermine the UN I'd be disappointed. On a related note did you hear that President Bush is sending his brother Jeb and Colin Powell to assess the situation in the tsunami affected area. Can you say Bush in '08?
Posted by: MB at December 30, 2004 6:01 PMI thought the idea is to actually ... you know ... aid the victims, not to prop up the image of a corrupt institution like the U.N..
