Drug for Only Blacks Stirs Hope, Concern (Thomas H. Maugh II, November 9, 2004, LA Times)

A new heart drug that targets African Americans reduced deaths from advanced heart failure by 43% and reduced hospitalizations by a third, setting the stage for it to become the first drug approved for only one racial group.

Although many cardiologists Monday hailed the findings because blacks die from heart failure at twice the rate of whites, some geneticists were concerned, arguing that racial categories were an inappropriate way to guide medical treatment.

There might be a genetic predisposition that makes the drug effective, but that predisposition is not necessarily related to race, critics say.

"It's great that this is showing such promise to treat heart failure," said ethicist Jonathan Kahn of Hamline University School of Law in Minnesota. "But it is extremely unfortunate that the packaging has been associated with race. All you can tell from the data is that [the drug] works against heart failure. The patients happened to be black, but you can't make any claims based on the data."

The insistence that race is a social construct is a perfectly admirable attempt by Darwinists to get themselves off the hook for justifying eugnenics, genocide, and ethnic cleansing, but luckily good doctors know better than to take them seriously.

Racism is simply a combination of collectivism and genetics. Since leftists can't admit there is anything wrong with collectivism, they have to blame racism on genetics.

I don't know who the hell this Jonathan Kahn is, but he doesn't speak for me. Blacks differ from whites in a cardiovascular sense? OK, fine. Give 'em what works for them, and give me what works for me. The situation probably isn't that simple, but if it is, it doesn't contradict my (left/liberal) beliefs. (I figure that genetically we're all mostly the same, but it sure looks as if many diseases, or predispositions to diseases, show up at one or two points on the gene sequence.)

There are ethnic differences among people but the notion of categorizing people into 3 or 4 races seems absurd. There are vast areas of the globe where the 'races' have intermingled for millenia. Egypt, the Middle East and Eastern Europe come to mind.

It is far from inconceivable that African-Americans may receive greater benefit from a particular drug, but I would be surprised if it benefitted the Blacks of Ethiopia or South Africa to the same degree.
