THE VALUES PLOY: Should Democrats become values whores? (Stephen Pizzo, 11/04/04, AlterNet)

I was listening to Mike Barnacle this morning ranting on MSNBC about how the Dems need to get with this whole "values" thing or they will be a minority party forever. He said that Dems have to stop making fun "of people who say they dunked their heads in a river and discovered Jesus," and who want to defend traditional concepts like marriage. Otherwise, Barnacle said, the Dems will continue losing to the party that recognizes and honors those beliefs.

America is divided, not just on the war and economic policy, but also on this whole "values" business.

Democrats should just be honest and run as the party opposed to the "values business."

If the Democrats were smart, that is exactly what they would do. From what I am hearing, the far Left wants the Democrats push the values card on economics.

"Is it moral that we allow people to go homeless"? "Is it moral that we take away Social Security and Medicare from the elderly"? "Is it moral that we don't give enough money to schools to educate our children"? "Is it moral that we allow people to go without healthcare"? "Is it moral that we allow tax cuts for the rich"? On and on...

Let's see if the Democrats are smart.

You'll note the President presents ownership and FBI as values based programs. Democrats can't win on that turf either.

Vince: The Democrats can't argue voters into caring about a different morality. "Morality isn't about abortion and gay marriage, it's about jobs and progressive taxation." That's a loser.

They lack that "values thing."

The Democrats ran as the party of moral reprobates, America-haters and people out for something for nothing. However, what choice does a party which is utterly dependent on Hollywood types, Gays, and trial lawyers have for a platform?
