THERE'S ONLY ONE QUESTION LEFT....(via Joe):
Dr. Bouffard Speaks About Boston Globe!: INDC EXCLUSIVE!! MUST CREDIT INDC!! (INDC, 9/11/04)
I just interviewed Dr. Bouffard again, and he's angry that the Globe has misrepresented him. He's been getting hate mail and nasty phone calls since last night's story was posted, and he wants me to correct the record. He did not change his mind, and he and his colleagues are becoming more certain that these documents are forgeries.Instead of providing my analysis of our conversation, I'm largely going to transcribe his unaltered quotes (please note that he's a rather colorful, engaging older gentleman):
(I'm dynamically updating as I transcribe quotes, so keep refreshing)
"What the Boston Globe did now sort of pisses me off, because now I have people calling me and e-mailing me, and calling me names, saying that I changed my mind. I did not change my mind at all!"
"I would appreciate it if you could do whatever it takes to clear this up, through your internet site, or whatever."
"All I'd done is say, 'Hey I want to look into it.' Please correct that damn impression!"
"What I said to them was, I got new information about possible Selectric fonts and (Air Force) documents that indicated a Selectric machine could have been available, and I needed to do more analysis and consider it."
"But the more information we get and the more my colleagues look at this, we're more convinced that there are significant differences between the type of the (IBM) Composer that was available and the questionable document."
"The (new Selectric) typefaces sent to me invalidated the theory about the foot on the four (originally reported to INDC), but after looking at this more, there are still many more things that say this is bogus."
What did Dan Rather know and when did he know it? Posted by Orrin Judd at September 11, 2004 4:41 PM
Not much and too late, it would seem.
Posted by: Raoul Ortega at September 11, 2004 5:19 PMThe only reasonable (to me) inference is that Dan is desperate to protect the source of the memos. This would indicate three likely possibilities: 1) the Kerry campaign, 2) the DNC, or 3) his daughter.
Posted by: jd watson at September 11, 2004 5:30 PMDoubtless the NYT and WaPo editorial pages will be issuing mea culpas tommorrow for being fooled again by bad intelligence.
Posted by: Jason Johnson at September 11, 2004 5:40 PMBasically CBS was playing Russian roulette for $5 stakes on this. If they got lucky and the memos were real, they get a couple of days of news, but no one cares anyway, because this story was played to death years ago. If they were unlucky, they're toast. They're looking awfully crispy right about now...
Posted by: brian at September 11, 2004 6:09 PMIt was interesting watching Margaret Carlson prattle on during The Capital Gang tonight about how the Boston Globe had come up with a typographic expert who was supporing CBS' story, since Dr. Bouffard's complaints about being decived by the paper had been on the Internet for about 5 1/2 hours at the time.
To be fair, Bob Novak didn't know about the latest claims either, but you would think someone on CNN's research staff, if not the panelists themselves, would have at least peeked at the Internet during the day to see if there were any new developments (On the other hand, when Al Hunt introduced the segement, he promanently mentioned questions being raised about the CBS report by ABC, The Washington Post and The New York Times and, ohyes, afewwebsitesmayhavedonesomethingtopushthestoryalong, but we won't get into even mentioning any names, because they're .. well, they're websites).

Probably when he helped rig the thing up. He's a liar and so is CBS. I read all this nonsense about him being snookered. Snookered is a bunch of BS,He knew the documents are forgeries but it fit his agenda. He has to know but he has the microphone. Why is the first amendment waisted on d**k heads like Rather and CBS? I feel sad that this thing will dwindle out and CBS will come out on top like always. They still have the floor and the loudest voice. I hope you guy's with the blogs keep after CBS and knock the props out from under them. You're our only hope. Don't give in. TW

Typpical Drudge Daily Readers 4,000,000
Guys, we need to keep the pressure up on this. I think Dr. Bouffard now needs to avail himself of the services of a junkyard-dog type of lawyer or PR person who will apply their teeth to the collective rears of the MSM until they get the story straight, and we need to do our parts by contacting the local MSM outlets and telling them where they're going wrong. I already emailed the Globe's ombudsman tonight and sent her links to all the previous INDC posts where Dr. Bouffard expresses his opinion. (Small hope of her actually reading them, I know, but the effort is the effort.)
Posted by: Joe at September 11, 2004 9:54 PMSlightly OT - the Boston PBS station has a show called Beat the Press hosted by Emily Rooney (Andy Rooney's daughter) and has a few local news types on (mostly lefties). The show analyzes the news from the press' point of view. The last week few week have been amazing as the panelists rail on about the internet, shoddy reporting by the internet, the unfairness of the swift boat ads, journalist integrity, etc. filtered through the lefty media lens. It is really true that old media is crumbling and has no idea what hit them.
Posted by: AWW at September 11, 2004 10:56 PMWell...
I'd hold the obituaries for the "old media".
While it's true that the old style of the MSM is going away, the companies and "talent", (for lack of a better term), are not going to go away.
They're going to co-opt the blogsphere.
The current crop of blogs will end up being the tabloids of the New Media.
On the plus side, some current bloggers might end up making a nice career out of the transition.
