SWEEPING THE SOUTH:

Poll shows Vitter in lead for Senate seat (The Associated Press, 9/10/04)

Republican David Vitter is consolidating his front-running status in the U.S. Senate race, jumping to 42 percent in the latest poll by pollster Verne Kennedy.

The Metairie congressman's three Democratic rivals -- state treasurer John Kennedy, U.S. Rep. Chris John, and state rep. Arthur Morrell -- are at 19, 16 and 3 percent respectively in the 600-person poll, taken while the Republican National Convention was held in New York between Aug. 30 and Sept.r 2.

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.1 percent.

Presumably the Kerry campaign won't even make an effort in LA either.

Louisiana is one of the states that has a homosexual marriage ballot measure in November. Wonder what position Vitter's challengers are taking.

The good news here is that Vitter's total (42) is higher than the Dems combined (38). Under the Louisiana runoff systems if Vitter doesn't get 50 then the 2nd place finisher and he do a runoff and in the runoff anything can happen.
LA, given its significant trend toward the GOP and that Bush should win by double digits is due to elect a GOP Senator.
As for Kerry I continue to wonder if the Southern Dem Senate candidates are helped by him not campaigning in the South since the GOP can't tag the candidate to Kerry.

AWW:

I know that LA is solid Republican in recent presidential elections. But, as you say, 'anything can happen' in a runoff for statewide office. In a runoff, does Vitter's 42% (plus some) hold, or do the dead in New Orleans' cemetaries float to vote?

John supposedly is another 'Crowley boy' like Breaux and Edwards. Where are the other Dems from? If Vitter can hold the NO suburbs, he can win in the North against pretty much anyone.
