U.S., Iraqi forces in major move to secure Syrian border (WORLD TRIBUNE.COM, 8/4/04)
The U.S. military, backed by Iraqi forces, has launched its first major operation along the border with Syria.Does the Iraqi security situation require the sovereign Iraqi government to launch a preemptive strike on Syria? Now, that would be brilliant. Posted by David Cohen at August 4, 2004 4:09 PMU.S. officials said Operation Phantom Linebacker has mobilized thousands of U.S. and Iraqi soldiers as well as armored combat vehicles, unmanned air vehicles and helicopters in an effort to stem the flow of insurgents, funds and weapons from Syria into Iraq.
The officials said the operation came in wake of a determination that the Sunni insurgency, including support for Abu Mussib Al Zarqawi, was coming mainly from Saddam Hussein loyalists who have fled to Syria.
Question - the theory has been that if Iraq calms down and people focus on the economy then Bush will get reelected. A violent or messy Iraq threatens Bush's reelection. So if the US/Iraq attack Syria and things getty messy again does that help or hurt Bush's reelection efforts?
