NOT REAGAN, KENNEDY:

Bush's spiral awes Browns (Marla Ridenour, 8/01/04, Akron Beacon Journal)

No matter what the Cleveland Browns think of President Bush's politics, at least they'll remember he throws a tight spiral.

The president surprised the team with a 45-minute visit before practice Saturday morning en route to appearances in Canton and Pittsburgh. He shook hands and chatted with players and employees, posed for pictures and threw a few passes to receivers Dennis Northcutt and Andre Davis.

"It was definitely the honor of a lifetime," Davis said.

With Bush in Cleveland on Friday for the opening of the International Children's Games, Browns owner Randy Lerner laid the groundwork for the appearance. It left ever-talkative defensive end Kenard Lang in awe.

"He's somebody you see on TV all the time. You think, `Man it would be great to meet him,' "Lang said. "You finally meet him you're like `Wow. The leader of our country.' You're kind of starstruck. He seemed like a nice person, genuine, and enjoys sports."

What's the big deal?--players in the National Soccer League say John Kerry throws just like a pro.

I used to deliver the Akron Beacon Journal as a lad.

Several weeks ago, Pres. Bush threw out the first pitch. From the rubber. It was a strike.

A couple weeks ago I the evening news showed Kerry attempting the same feat. From the base of the mound. Didn't even reach the plate.

Kerry would have thrown a perfect 110mph fastball if only the baseball had cost over $1000 because it was made from the hide of a Kentucky Derby winner.

Kerry pushed the ball. He did not get on top of it. I think his staff claimed it was due to an old war wound.

When he served in Vietnam he threw many baseballs, sometimes at the VC, sometimes at other sailors or, more commonly, at the many innocent civilians murdered by himself and other members of the U.S military. Actually that reminds him of a funny anecdote involving himself and another serviceman, who's name escapes him for the moment, that demonstrates his simple, man of the people charm and straightforward patriotism. Subsequently he becames disillusioned and returned to the U.S. From Vietnam, that is, where he served his country in Vietnam, that place again: Vietnam.

Throwing a tight spiral is all well and good, but has Bush ever visited with Manny Ortez the way John Kerry did before last Sunday's game? And when he was at Harvard, did he ever go out and cheer for that great Red Sox Eddie Yost? I think not...

I wonder if George W will be available for the Fantasy Football draft coming up....

A secret service agent got in the way.

I'm beginning to see the similarities between John Kerry and Monty Burns.

Yeah, but Kerry can throw someone else's medals pretty far.
