CLELAND EFFECT CONTINUED:

CIA nominee called too partisan: Rep. Porter Goss, President Bush's nominee to head the CIA, is accused of being too partisan to be an independent leader of the intelligence agency. (FRANK DAVIES, 8/12/04, Miami Herald)

'I think it diminishes Porter Goss to apply the label `only a politician,' given the diversity of his experience and record,'' said Sen. Bob Graham, who has disagreed with Goss and the administration on the Iraq war, yet supports Goss for CIA director.

But other Democrats said that as intelligence and policy failures mounted in Iraq this year, Goss did too little to investigate them, while becoming a Bush-Cheney spokesman who tried to tear down the Democratic nominee's national security credentials. Goss did this, they said, because he avidly sought the CIA post.

Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, warned that Goss ``might be too entrenched in the status quo and be seen as too partisan to lead at this critical time.''

Rep. Robert Wexler, a Palm Beach County Democrat, said Goss had ''failed in his obligation'' to investigate intelligence failures in Iraq while ``playing a high-level role in the Bush-Cheney campaign.''

They should just wear "Kick me" signs.

It's great! The Dem nuts (journaller Graham, Harkin, and Wexler) all come out and assume the face of the party, even as the Kerry campaign struggles to convince everyone that they're not nuts on national security.

What a fun August!

Sen. Graham, while nuts in some ways, is supporting Rep. Goss's nomination. This should make things interesting.
