A FEW MORE DEFEATS LIKE THIS ONE AND IRAQ WILL BE SWITZERLAND:

72 Iraqis Killed in Fighting in Kut (VOA News, 12 Aug 2004)

Authorities in the southeastern Iraqi city of Kut say at least 72 people were killed and nearly 150 others wounded Thursday in U.S. airstrikes and fighting between Iraqi police and Shi'ite militiamen.

Health ministry officials said victims are all Iraqis -- most of them members of the Shi'ite Mehdi Army militia, which is battling U.S. and Iraqi forces in the nearby holy city of Najaf.

Bush gambles as Najaf burns (Michael Schwartz, 8/13/04, Asia Times)
The administration of US President George W Bush has embarked on a desperate military adventure in hopes of creating the appearance of a pacified Iraq. The assault on the holy city of Najaf, with its attendant slaughter of combatants and civilians, its destruction of whole neighborhoods, and its threat to Shi'ite holy cities, is fraught with the possibility of another major military defeat

"desperate"? "major military defeat"? What the heck is he even talking about? We tried not killing the guy, now he's making us--won't be hard and no one minds. By exercising such discipline we've even won support for mussing up Najaf a bit.

Re Asia Times article: Gee, ever notice that the only people who are credited with any ability to decide events are the Americans? No mention in the lead graf that the Mahdi militia were being assembled by Sadr and told to fight. Nope, only thing here is ugly Americans deciding (for no reason) to go into the city and start attacking the residents who obviously need to defend themselves.....

"another major military defeat"

When was the first one.

N.B. I am not related to that Michael Schwartz in any way.

Gosh, if only Sistani or one of the other Grand Ayatollahs were in town to complain about burning Najaf. I guess Bush just got lucky again that they're all unavailable just when Al-Sadr needs them to save his butt.

The great thing about finally icing Sadr is that there will finally be proof that insurgents will pay for their rebellions. While of course the ordinary stooge has always been dying, nailing the big guy hasn't been done yet. It will discourage others from deciding to do roll the dice. And it will free our forces to hit Fallujah.
