TAKING OFF THE GLOVES

Kerry's Wife Helps Design Campaign Scarf (AP, 4/5/04)

Teresa Heinz Kerry is a millionaire philanthropist and a popular public speaker for her husband's presidential campaign. Now she can add scarf designer to her resume.

Heinz Kerry has been draping a new red, white and blue silk scarf around her neck that she helped design for her husband's campaign. The scarf is covered with little flags and her husband's initials and says "John Kerry for President 2004" in script at the bottom.

The initials I understand, but I'm surprised that they're waving the Tricolore so openly.

Hillarious. What's next? A beret?

As I am wont to do, I snickered at the title and the story. As she is wont to do, my wife asked me what is funny. It usually takes too much to explain, so I don't. This time, however, I said it was a story about John Kerry's wife making a scarf.

I asked her if she knew who Kerry is (after a day with the 6th to 8th graders and then evenings with our kids, she's not too eager for serious talk most nights).

"Isn't he the comedian? Oh, wait, he's the...political figure."

"Political figure?" I ask.

Pause..."Running for president."

While this shows the common knowledge that most pay no attention until after the summer, I feel much better about November.

Kerry might not be a comedian, but I sure laugh at him a lot.

Just wait until they design the bunting for the convention.
