Philadelphia keeps Street as mayor in campaign divided by race (DAVID B. CARUSO, November 4, 2003, Associated Press)
Mayor John Street easily won re-election against a familiar rival Tuesday after a racially charged campaign that became even more divisive when an FBI bug was discovered in the mayor's office. The Democrat was leading Republican businessman Sam Katz, 59 to 41 percent with 72 percent of precincts reporting. Minor violence and alleged intimidation were reported at polling places around the city.
It speaks volumes about the state of black America that Mayor Street's campaign was helped by news he was being investigated for influence peddling.

Posted by: RDB at November 4, 2003 10:18 PMAnd when Street is indicted, will the city rise up and defend him? I am still waiting for Bill Campbell to be indicted for all the corruption in Atlanta prior to and during the Olympics.
Posted by: jim hamlen at November 4, 2003 10:34 PMAnd what does this fiasco have to say about the efficacy of the FBI?
Posted by: genecis at November 4, 2003 10:54 PMStreet won the minute that FBI bugging information broke. Black voters rallied round Street because in their eye's it was another example of the man trying to bring a prominent black man down. It doesn't matter if he was corrupt or not to them. Look at Marion B. in D.C. and his election victories after he was busted smokin' crack with a hooker for goodness sake!
