RAISING CAIN:

Ex-Pizza Chain Exec Joins Senate Race (Denis O'Hayer, 9/10/2003, WXIA-TV)

A former pizza chain executive joined the already crowded list of candidates vying to replace retiring Georgia Sen. Zell Miller.

Herman Cain, a millionaire African-American conservative, announced his candidacy at the Georgian Terrace hotel in Atlanta Wednesday.

Cain can call on his personal fortune and network of famous friends for support in the campaign. Former Republican presidential candidates Jack Kemp and Steve Forbes are honorary co-chairs of Cain's campaign.

Cain, a sharecropper's son-turned-millionaire businessman, bought the Godfather's Pizza chain from Pillsbury. He wants to replace the income tax with a national sales tax. [...]

Cain said his other top priorities are health care reform and setting up private investment accounts as an alternative to Social Security.

If he's conservative on social issues he's the GOP's dream candidate.

True, but he'll probably not get the GOP nomination due to internal GA politics and running against established GA pols. Bush/Rove would need to clear the field for him to get it and perhaps they should.

I agree - he will be starting behind Isakson and Mac Collins, but someone needs to do some arm-twisting. At this point, it wouldn't hurt to have Newt get behind him also. Who knows, even Zell might endorse him!
