THANK GOODNESS FOR EGGOS:

Belgium to refuse transit to US forces if Iraq war declared without UN backing (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
Belgium will refuse transit rights to US forces if Washington decides to wage war against Iraq without the authorization of the United Nations, Foreign Minister Louis Michel says.

...otherwise we'd be having freedom waffles for breakfast. Posted by Orrin Judd at March 16, 2003 1:30 PM

I hope, at least, that the US adopts one

DeGaullian policy. When France separated

from her African colonies, DeGaulle gave them

Hobson's Choice: associate in a French bloc.

If they didn't, he took everything French that

wasn't nailed down, and even what was,

inclucing the phones. (Don't ask me why

he wanted the phones, which, being French,

did not work.)

When Belgium comes calling, for example for

visas for Belgians to travel to the US, they

should be greeted with the "Nobody Home" sign.

Reminds me of that joke I heard the other day... How do you make a Belgian Waffle? You make him live up to his treaty obligations!

Or was it "ask him" to live up to his treaty obligations? I forget.

If Belgium actually had any territory that American forces had to travel through on the way to Iraq, this statement might mean something. As it is, it's grandstanding pure and simple. (I like Eggos, by the way, though it's been a while since I've had any; I'm not really that much of a breakfast person.)

Aunt Jemima makes good toaster waffles too. And so does Thomas's. With all these options, who needs Belgium at all?
