TRENT IS TOAST:
Trent Lott News Conference at 5:30 p.m. Eastern TimePosted by Orrin Judd at December 13, 2002 1:21 PM
"Lott does not intend to step down as Majority Leader. White House has been told Lott plans to apologize again. Rove/Bush has requested a more forceful apology from senator in final push to put this behind him... MORE..." - Drudge
Posted by: Henry Hanks at December 13, 2002 12:52 PMOne site is saying the word is being leaked is that he is not stepping down.
Let's hope their wrong - otherwise Bush et all will have to forceably remove him
Trent Lott. I don't think he's dumb, but he is thick.
Posted by: Whackadoodle at December 13, 2002 2:48 PMI don't need to hear another Patsy Cline song. Just step down, already.
Posted by: Melissa at December 13, 2002 3:15 PMThe Democrats will be making a serious strategic error if they force Lott out. No one could wish for a more ineffective opponent. In exchange for a quick high of dethroning the pork-schmoozing Lott, they'll get someone far more effective and agenda-centered like Nickles or McConnell.
Better they had kept the volume down for the moment and used this little trump card down the road to bend Lott to their will.
Michelle Malkin's piece on Lott is well worth reading. She hits the nail on the head:

Don't Senate Republicans have to vote for him anyway in January to hold the office?
Posted by: Andrew X at December 13, 2002 4:05 PMso Lott doesn't resign, offering more half-hearted apologies. It seems clear he won't step aside. Other GOPers, particularly the president will have to step up or they will see the next Congress and hopes for 2004 dashed as Lott is even more ineffective than before.

I think they voted already--I know the House did.
