SO WAS I ONCE MYSELF A SWINGER OF BIRCHES:

KENNEDY IS KILLED BY SNIPER AS HE RIDES IN CAR IN DALLAS; JOHNSON SWORN IN ON PLANE (Tom Wicker, 11/22/63, NY Times)
President John Fitzgerald Kennedy was shot and killed by an assassin today.

He died of a wound in the brain caused by a rifle bullet that was fired at him as he was riding through downtown Dallas in a motorcade.

Vice President Lyndon Baines Johnson, who was riding in the third car behind Mr. Kennedy's, was sworn in as the 36th President of the United States 99 minutes after Mr. Kennedy's death.

Mr. Johnson is 55 years old; Mr. Kennedy was 46.

Shortly after the assassination, Lee H. Oswald, who once defected to the Soviet Union and who has been active in the Fair Play for Cuba Committee, was arrested by the Dallas police. Tonight he was accused of the killing.

"Bad President .."? Please elaborate. Certainly not one of the greatest; but "bad?"

Gene: He either stole the election or at the very least countenanced extensive fraud. Eisenhower warned him that there was no "missile gap" but he continued to exploit it, knowing Nixon would't reveal the classified data that showed there was none. He first faoiled to topple Castro (Bay of Pigs) then gave an American guarantee that we'd leave him in power (Missile Crisis). Michael Beschloss has writtren about how he was so whacked on drugs that it affected his dealings with the Soviets, possibly provoking the Missile Crisis. etc., etc., etc.

But wasn't he at least the last Democrat for whom the words "tax cut" didn't make his ears bleed?

JW:

Sure, he was conservative, but he was a lightweight.

LBJ was way better than people say. "The more I do for them, the less they like me" he said once.

JFK had said, "The less I do for them, the more they like me."
