HOW MANY OF THE DETAILS IN RON SUSKIND'S LATEST ALLEGATION DID THEY CONFIRM INDEPENDENTLY?:

Mainstream media finally pounce on Edwards' affair: 'It's good to see public acknowledgment that our story was accurate all along,' says the National Enquirer's editor. But what took so long? (Matea Gold, 8/08/08, Los Angeles Times)

The Enquirer's stories caused waves in the blogosphere but got little bounce from major print publications or television networks, which largely steered clear of the allegations.

Edwards ultimately admitted the affair Friday in an interview on "Nightline" with Bob Woodruff, who covered his 2004 presidential bid. The former senator maintained that he was not the father of Hunter's daughter.

David Perel, editor of the Enquirer, said he felt vindicated.

"It's good to see public acknowledgment that our story was accurate all along," he said.

Edwards' confession appeared timed for minimal exposure, coming on a Friday night when many TV viewers would be watching the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.

But the news immediately triggered a wave of anger and disappointment on Internet message boards, along with pointed condemnation of the news media.

"Probably the biggest question about this whole mess is why the mainstream media protected Edwards by ignoring the story for the past 8 months," read one typical comment on ABC News' website.

Several news executives contended that their organizations had been pursuing the story but had not yet confirmed enough details to run it.

You get what you pay for and National Enquirer pays top dollar. Other than bat boy and Carol Burnett they have been reasonably trustworthy.

Edwards is a Democrat so they would need testimony from the recording angel himself before they'd pursue it.

What's wonderful is the sense of shame in the MSM about not doing their job. They know they messed up
