GREAT MOMENTS IN GIVING UP:

So I'm reading Helene Tursten's police procedural, The Torso, and, to my surprise it has footnotes, not something you come across often in mystery novels. Not to worry though, Soho Press only put them there to explain the metric measurements used in this Swedish book to the American audience. Sublime.

...and with key phrases "gay sex shop" and "Scandinavian models" sounds like a page turner!

A fine mystery series in translation from Italian is the one concerning Inspector Montalbano written by Andrea Camilleri. Each of those has helpful notes that explain the political situation, recipe, or work of art being alluded to. They aren't footnotes exactly, they are collected at the back of the book.
